Franchise you'd like to see brought back. - 11/03/12 10:15 AM

Is there a franchise that you miss dearly? Would you really, really like to see it relicensed so that you might enjoy it all over again; or maybe even for your first time? Tell us all about it.

There's two fanservice laden girls with guns-esque titles that I'd love to see on DVD again:

Burn Up franchise
Gunsmith Cats

Another fanservice laden title that comes to mind that kiku would like to see "brought back" is Amazing Nurse Nanako.

hmmm I haven't really done any research on any of the old anime's that I've seen as a kid and those from a few years back.

I suppose outlaw stars. I don't know if it's still selling or not. I use to watch it on cartoon network or did it air on adult swim at night? I can't remember much of it but I'll get it if it's still out there.

Outlaw Star is available at RightStuf. It's pretty affordable too. I love Outlaw Star. Any self respecting fan of Firefly/Serenity simply must have Outlaw Star in their collection.

I think I may have mentioned this before on another thread, but now that Central Park Media is gone, the Patlabor franchise might be a good one to re-boot. Of course, it might be a good idea to produce new masters for the DVDs, because all of mine had the same weird defect.

Also, with Bandai leaving the picture, now might be a good time to pick up the Banner of the Stars franchise.

Of course, with all the buzz currently about Rose of Versailles and Princess Knight, the title I keep hearing about over and over again is Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I have no idea what that title is even about, but with all of the demand for it, I wonder if that might be the next item on the Dark Lord's agenda.

I do hope Funi or Sentai can pick up the Banner Of The Stars franchise. Also since we are bringing up Bandai do you expect Sentai to grab the 1st season of K-On! since they already have season 2?

Yes, I would expect that, but the ways of the business world are passing strange, so we won't know for sure unless/until it is announced.

When They Cry; no brainer, Umineko's getting a release.
Steel Angel Kurumi; legendary, nuff said. Oh yeah, plus fanservice.
Tenjho Tenge; especially considering the succes of Ikki Tousen, which is simlar in genre. Oh yeah, plus fanservice.
Familiar Of Zero; especially considering the recent releases of Shakugan No Shana, which is similar in genre. Oh yeah, plus fanservice.

Only if he's a bit megalomaniac... wink
AFAIK LoGH is a 110 OVA (yes 110 direct to video/LD episodes...) space opera (think Macross, Banner/Crest of the Stars, Star Wars etc.) series with, according to anidb, 2 side story OVA series and 3 movies.
I kind of doubt Rightstuf would want to take on a project the size of UY/Ranma/Naruto/Bleach/etc. wink
It being a bit "older" (1988-1997) in combination with likely high license price [1] probably wouldn't do well for the odds of a release (OTOH, Galaxy Express 999 is getting a DVD release and that's also quite old and long... ).

[1] HLJ still lists 39 items under the "Heldensagen vom Kosmosinsel" German name for it, even though according to AniDB no LoGH has been released after 2000.
I don't think many anime can keep that much merchandise available that long after their release...

I think that there were three movies. "Samurai X", "Trust and Betrayal", and "Reflection". "Trust" and "Betrayal" were originally two OVAs of two episodes each, which were eventually cobbled together into one movie. This movie is out of print, but still available through third party vendors on the a***** site. "Reflection" also appears to be out of print. In fact, looking at the offerings on the a***** site, the entire franchise seems to be going oop.

MI: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=376
KOR: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=327

In the VHS and LD days, both fansubbers and commercial companies had to cherry pick what they wanted to bring over from Japan and those 2 were some of the few cherry picked from the late 80s...

You're probably right. Even if those side-story OVAs were reasonably short, that would still be about three times as long as anything Nozomi has ever attempted before (Aria probably being the longest at 52 episodes).

Edit: The Dirty Pair franchise is slightly longer with 42 TV episodes (counting DP Flash), 10 OVA episodes, and 3 movies.

Edit 2: A short bit of research on ANN reveals:
Main series: 110 episodes
Golden Wings (OVA): 1 episode (60 min.)
100 Billion Stars, 100 Billion Lights (OVA): 24 episodes (25 min each)
Spiral Labyrinth (OVA): 28 episodes
Overture to a New War: movie, remake of first two episodes
My Conquest is the Sea of Stars: movie

So, if we call "Golden Wings" a movie, we have 162 episodes and 3 movies.

Edit 3: Not only would it be hard to find a publisher to take this on, it would also break most fans' bank books. Something this big would have to be broken up into at least 8 (22 x 5, 24, 28, 3), and possibly as many as 15 (11 x 10, 12 x 2, 14 x 2, 3) sets. If the fans who say they want this really want it, they should put up a kick-starter project to get the ball rolling, and prove they're serious about it.

Re: Franchise you'd like to see brought back. - 11/03/12 12:48 PM

If you hunt & have some $ then about 95% of the old stuff is still out there.
Of course you might have to use several sources (Internet, & used game/movie stores) to hunt them down.

IIRC Sentai got the latest Familiar of Zero, so perhaps they could get the rest as well?

As for popular Bandai stuff (like Outlaw Star) you can bet that they will get rescued by somebody in the very near future.
However with less known stuff (like FLAG or Freedom Project) you might want to grab those ASAP.

Since I got lucky on several older titles, I really can't think of anything to add.

Since you're into Sailor Moon merchandise, you might want to look at purchasing the newly re-released manga. Both volumes of Codname Sailor V and the first eight volumes of the Sailor Moon manga are available now.

Based on their post in the manga section. I would guess they already own the newly released manga.
