i would say that all anime could use a Blu treatment, but that's the home theater-phile whore junkie in me :P

there are a ton of anime titles that would look gorgeous remastered on Blu, but whether or not we will get them is another story. if a series i like/want/already have gets a Blu rerelease, i would rebuy it, trade in my old dvds and get at least a bit of credit. it's better then none at that point.

For most recent anime TV series, I don't think it'll make a difference if they're remastered for Blu-Ray or not. They're mainly composed for standard definition TV sets to save storage space and sent out as digital files now to tape or disc. Who knows how many of these series actually go out on film anymore?

Of course, that's changing with digital shows done in the past few years, but most shows done before '05 are strictly standard-def TV series.

Already, there have been shows remastered for Blu-Ray that had no business being redone for Blu-Ray! These are more recent series like Yukikaze which was composed for standard definition TV sets and never intended for hi-def. The way that show was redone it actually ended up loosing details in its upconversion to Blu-Ray and looked softer.

A lot of older series and movies which actually benefit from the move to Blu-Ray since they're saved on film stock (16mm for TV shows or 35mm for theatrical releases) as opposed to digital files like Yukikaze. The main bugaboo about older shows is the need to clean dirty frames, stabilize shifting frames, and be wary of the temptation to clean up that "nasty film grain."

Film grain is already becoming an issue with older film release to Blu-Ray conversion in the US and no doubt it'll affect Japanese releases as well. If companies are stupid enough to go tinkering with film grain, it'll actually remove details from films! I've already seen this happening with standard def releases that went through digital video noise reduction (DVNR).

DVNR is one of the worst things that can happen to animation since the logarithms in the video restoration programs used can't distinguish between scratches and thin inklines in animation! It's affected the AnimEigo releases of Macross as well as WB animation DVD releases.

The temptation to tinker with film grain for Blu-Ray releases will make DVNR seem mild by comparison. There are just some things that should be left alone on film...

The real advantage to Bluray conversion for existing releases is the likely-hood the conversion will be of higher quality than the consumer will achieve at home. Of course for people with high-end up-scalers this is not a benefit, but for most, the cost to acquire high-end hardware appears to be very steep when looking at the cost of re-acquiring some titles in newer formats.

I want a very good up-scaler since the cost associated with replacing my existing video collection is well in excess of the cost of hardware.

The unfortunate portion of this tale is the fact that many commercial companies have yet to master encoding in the new hi-def codecs.

You know, I sort of noticed some tinkering on the DVD release of Gunbuster which was remastered in HD (HD 24P). The faces looked different almost if they had been redrawn. Gunbuster is an older anime with fine sketching in the faces.

i'd pay it if i had the extra moolah. shoot. regular import dvd box sets used to cost that much, and this is blu-ray. it may seem like a lot, but it's actually priced fairly reasonably.
