If you asked me 4 yrs ago I would have said dubbed. Then came Saiyuki (tv). I've been watching subbed ever since. Some titles I've tried to watch dubbed. I've heard so much about Space Battleship Yamato and love to see it but I can't bring myself to watch Star Blazers.
yamato subbed in its original japanese is amazing. < quick snip for mentioning specific fan-subbing group - Sorry! - Alison >
Leiji Matsumoto may be a niche market for the US, but he and his works are Classics. it will always be my unending dream that all of his works are licensed and brought to the US. and i'm not talking his new stuff, but the classics of the 70s and early 80s.
i love this anime. AWESOME!! prolly one of the best new works that Matsumoto has been involved with. i bought the original Daftpunk cd and have the dvd, of course. i remember when talk of Interstella first came out and u could stream-download the first few OVAS, but then they took it all offline. i was all in tears, and then the dvd license was announced and i bought it as soon as it came out

Otakuden offers a compelling argument. An actor's ability and skill are multicultural. Even if you're unaccustomed to hearing japanese you'll still pick up on the acting. A good actor has the ability to bring a character to life. If there's no sincerity in the acting then it's not a convincing performance regardless what language it's spoken in. For example, when someone says, "I'm sorry" it not what they say but how they say it which makes it convincing.
why thank you

but, we both had compelling arguments/sides/viewpoints. i dun think it was a matter of either one being wrong, but more-so of both being valid in their own account.
you also articulated very well one of the main points/reasons why with any foreign movie or production, i will watch it in the original language. inflection, emotion, intent, etc don't always translate well over to another language. and that's not even counting untranslateable cultural differences.
i liken it to trying to watch Pan's Labyrinth in english. brrr! -.- i can't wait to get this movie in Blu. i have the regular release, but will def rebuy it when i buy my Blu-Ray player later this year. i also need to remember to pick up the movie Devil's Backbone, which is also by the same director.
