Dubtitles = the subtitle script is an exact copy of the dub script, instead of being a unique translation that takes advantage of the fact that you don't have to worry about lip flaps and other such things in subtitling. A dub script is naturally going to need at least a few compromises here and there that have no reason to be forced upon the subs too.

Thanks for the info.

Is this a way to get the movie/show out faster? Instead of playing around with two seperate scripts are they just using one script for everything?

It is Sony being Sony and pushing something on you that they know you want even if you don’t know it. And I know, people will hate me for this, but I don't so much mind the dub on Blood+.
If the dubtitles are the only reason you are holding back on enjoying this anime then maybe you should take a step back and take a look at just who it is that released this one.
First off, you are lucky that it is getting a DVD release at all knowing the anime history Sony has. And you are extremely lucky that it is getting a Japanese track.
It is a good show; don't handicap it for something like this. If I handicapped it because I have to call up the dub when I first put it into the player then I never would have bought it. Because that drives me absolutely up the wall.

This is still on my "to watch" list. If this has a good dub or not i don't know (nor complain about it). It was more out of curiousity than anything else.

Nah, it's just laziness and ignorance. You know, Sony.

unfortunately, sony being sony isn't a valid excuse or reason to dubtitle a 50+ episode tv series. for myself, that is enough of a detriment to my ability to enjoy this particular anime (or any foreign film/series which gets subpar treatment), especially when dubtitles are usually glaringly obvious to me.

much like Buena Vista dubtitled their first couple Miyazaki-Ghibli releases (Kiki's Delivery Service and Totoro if i remember correctly), i didn't buy those but the imports instead. Buena Vista saw the error of their ways though, and all further Miyazaki releases received a proper subtitles script.

is it partly a personal preference in how i enjoy my anime, yes.

on the flip-side, a proper subtitle track is the responsibility of the license holder and for that license holder to simply use the dub script for the original language, that is a failure in their responsibility to the original work and disrespectful to the original work and the viewers. i will never be grateful to an anime company who licensed a hard-to-get series (which Blood+ is not; too mainstream) and who then use my gratitude as an excuse to not follow through on all their commitments.

it's an age-old question/battle i've fought against for over a decade and thankfully dubtitles have become pretty much nonexistent in the world of anime and foreign film so it is always disheartening to see cases of it crop up randomly.

pretty much so, yes. the essence of using one script, usually the dub, for both the dub track and the subtitle track is essentially the same as using one script. in all reality though, it is no more nor less work to create a subtitle script and time it to the content. creating and finally a subtitle track takes less work the creating and finalizing and integrating a dub track. so together, there isn't all that much work involved in having the standard two scripts: one for dub and one for sub.

as something said, laziness about sums it up -.-

Hopefully this bad habit doesn't rub off on anyone else!
