All right now, we're down to less than a week. Surely someone on the forums will be hitting AnimeIowa (WhtHawk..long time lurker..?). I suppose it's fine if you don't want to chime in but please at least wave at the idiot with the overkill camera when you're there.

Sorry, no Anime Iowa plans here. The next con on my schedule is Naka-Kon in Kansas City, Missouri.

I attended one of those in 1977 (I was ten or eleven)... haven't been to one since. Gene was there, though.

I know that this isn't a con but it does celebrate Japanese Culture. I attended a Bon Odori Festival a couple of weeks ago in Charlotte, NC. It is held downtown on the first Sat. in August each year. It is very much like a traditional summer festival with various vendors with crafts, stuff for kids and lots of good food. The only things that would make it perfect would be having it at night on the grounds of a shrine and fireworks.

Where I live here in Colorado we have 2 anime conventions each year-Wasabi Con and Nan Desu Kon which is by far the bigger of the 2. Nan Desu Kon has been going on for almost 20 years-I'd say it attracts about 25 to 30 thousand visitors each year.

Well, I took a boatload of pictures at AnimeIowa. It'll take a while to process them all but I'm uploading them in groups to my Flickr account as they queue up. I had forgotten how photogenic the convention was! Latest additions are some pics from the excellent sushi restaurant within walking distance of the convention. Soon I'll upload a batch of photos from the cosplay chess match.

If you're interested, you're welcome to check them out here:

I suspect I'll be working on photos until mid-week.

Agreed. It's a clever idea for an event. The cosplayers clearly love it and it's a great photo op for everyone else. Luckily the weather was pleasant. August in the Midwest can be pretty brutal.

The downside is that it inspired me take too many pictures; I've been processing these damn things all week. I've got most of the cosplay contest up but once I get this last batch finished I may very well break 200 photos in the collection (I took 668!).
