I'll reserve some space in my budget for some of the titles on the list, but until we have some release details I'm not going to do the new anime dance.

A number of them are already listed for order on TRSI.

See the July 7, 2008 updates here!

Very good, but I'm looking for the The Familiar of Zero, and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.

Yeah, I wonder if we'll see them by the end of the year... and if they'll do sets or singles. Either way, since these aren't part of ongoing series, they'll be a bit longer.

I'm expecting singles for Zero (IIRC, it's typical length?) and sets for Nanoha. CCS was a disaster for Geneon as single disc releases, so I can't see them putting a show of comparable length and genre out in 4 episode singles (I know Nanoha is a lot different, but it's still very girly looking on the surface and a hard sell to casual BB type buyers as a result). OTOH, I could handle a single disc release in the vein of Sailor Moon. Double the episodes for the standard price of a single disc. And when the episode count was cut, so was price. But I'd still love 13 episode sets.

Zero no Tsukaima and Nanoha both have about the same number of episodes licensed. 25 for ZnT (13+12, pretty sure Futatsuki no Kishi is licensed) to 26 for Nanoha (13+13). Both would need only 6 typical singles, or two cour/season sets. StrikerS and Princesses no Rondo aren't licensed yet.

And even though CCS and Nanoha are different genres and shows, yes it will be hard to get Joe Schmoe at Best Buy to understand that. Of course, there's more than enough serious, action-y art they could put on the covers, and they can always drop the "Mahou Shoujo" from the title. I think Geneon was planning to do just that initially anyway.

Geneon will still be doing the work but it appears to be Funi making decisions about release format, and they ARE big on sets. So what remains to be seen, I guess, is if they can get permission to do these shows in sets from Sojitz/original license holders. I'm sure they will if they can, because they're trying to do almost everything else in singles.

My bad there. For some reason I thought Nanoha was 26 per season. Must have got lines crossed somewhere.

Actually, this isn't true. Funimation said Geneon is making the format decisions. Boxes or sets are up to them, Funi is only following their directions and pressing the discs. Though I wouldn't be surprised if they're making some suggestions on how to do things. It's just a matter of how much change Geneon wants to make in their habits and if it suits them for the titles they plan to release.

Don't I wish! Actually, not really, given how badly (relatively speaking) StrikerS turned out. Nanoha was always a show on a shoestring budget, but it got away with it for the one cour seasons. Some scenes even looked positively fantastic. But it's painfully apparent that, as someone on AOD put it, "StrikerS is 52 episodes of plot crammed into 26 episodes with 13 episodes of budget". =(

Ah, did they confirm this somewhere? You may well be right but it does seem like Funi has significant input, particularly because Geneon has no other way of getting their discs out if Funi doesn't play ball. If nothing else, Funi have proven to be far more business savvy than Geneon, so Geneon would be wise to follow their lead.

Agreed. Geneon is in this position because they were not making enough money. It stands to reason that they would begin taking a cue from those who have been more successful. The likely hood of complete sets also increases as the niche of the market increases. Lets face it, in recent times there has been a very large push to get larger sets to fans and the niche markets seem to have bigger chunks coming now than ever.
