Hello all

I’m looking for any good comedy animes, something along the lines of Full Metal Panic!? FUMOFFU.
Any suggestions and input will be much obliged.

Thank you

Kron

It would be tough to find a title that resembles Full Metal Panic!? FUMOFFU's unique blend of qualities but I can say that you're question is perfectly timed. I just finished watching Ramen Fighter Miki the other night and I specifically recall thinking to myself: "I haven't laughed this hard since FUMOFFU!" It is a near perfect blend of physical humor, sight-gags and wordplay that is all executed with spot-on timing. Technically it's a 12-episode OAV but each episode is split into two stand-alone storylines. The 3-disk OAV is relatively affordable with the tradeoff being that it's dub only.

Having never seen FMP, I have no idea how to compare a show to it. But if you're looking for good comedy, I'd recommend Ninja Nonsense, Azumanga Daioh, or the first three Tenchi series (they go downhill after Tokyo, and even that one displeases a lot of folks, though I enjoyed it). I'd also recommend Excel Saga, but only if you can read fast. grin

It has no Mechs in it, but then FUMOFFU didn't either really, but School Rumble is a comedy that I enjoyed quite a bit.

FUMOFFU would be top of the list for anime comedy series, however a couple other really good ones are Hono no Labyrinth, and Mahou Yuugi

Yeah, I would have to second Ramen Fighter Miki. It's one of the funniest titles I've watched in quite awhile.

I would also suggest "Those who hunt elves" seasons 1 & 2. It is old animation, but the comedy is pure gold.

Dragon Half is just full of stupid fun. it is a shame that the dude responsible for it got arrested after only 2 episodes got completed. I really liked where it was going.

dragon half r0cked. i never realized though that the anime producer (?) was arrested. i wouldn't mind if someone else picked it up and did more, not to mention the manga being licensed and translated smile

It is an urban ledged at this point. I don't think he really was, just that there wasn't enough interest in it for them to do the final 2 OVAs. But that isn't near as much fun to say, and how could there NOT be interest in Dragon Half? I mean come on.

I think the length helps keep Dragon Half endearing. It would be hard to carry that out much longer and keep from repeating the same set of jokes. Special Combat Duty Shinesmen is the same way.

I second those who recommended You're Under Arrest. It's just plain fun to watch, and the "Strikeman" episodes are priceless! Some of the short OVAs that followed the first season are especially funny, but I think it's better to be familiar with the regular series before watching the OVA specials. By contrast, the movie has a more serious tone. I also agree about Rune Soldier, Excel Saga, and Here is Greenwood.

Golden Boy has its moments, too, but it might not be what you're looking for... unless you're fond of overly spastic, Excel-style protagonists and female character designs that defy the laws of physics. Oh, wait, we're discussing anime...

EDIT: I forgot to mention Great Teacher Onizuka. The comedy is along the lines of Golden Boy.

a good point.

not that anime don't rehash the same shtuff over and over again in each episode (*coughTakeuchicough*) but if not done well it could get old fast. maybe a Dragon Half movie, or just a short OVA series...12 or 13 episodes long. that could be cool smile

I would watch it, but you would have to keep the same super deformed style and disjointed way that it would switch between chibi and SD. Normally I really hate that style but it really worked with that one.

Strikeman cracks me each time. Especially the way that Natsumi and Strikeman's personalities bounce off one another. Classic You're Under Arrest!! laugh

They already stated early on that they are going to be kind of hands off and just monitor what we say when it comes to titles and recommendations.

I've been pondering over Ninja Nonsense for some time.
Can anyone else recommend it as well?
And what type of comedy is used in it, goofy off the wall (Excel Saga) or more of an intellectual comedy?

I personally have only seen one episode and truth-be-told I really wasn't all that impressed. But one of my friends has seen all of it and he said it really wasn't too bad. I couldn't tell you what kind of comedy is in it, but it isn't intellectual at all.

i wouldn't classify Ninja Nonsense as excelish or intellectual. ironically, the title pretty much sums it up - Ninja Nonsense.

much like takahashi-san enjoyes poking fun at the japanese ninja, so too does Ninja Nonsense. in fact, japan as a whole rather enjoys poking fun at ninjas and usually don't take them too seriously.

take a little shoujo-ai, some dirty old man humor, ninja silliness, high school drama, and mix them all together...what you get is Ninja Nonsense (the manga is also being translated) which is, imo, rather hilarious smile

For good comedy I highly recommend Miami Guns. It really doesn't get the attention it deserves IMO, and last I checked RIghtstuf has all four volumes at a very good price.

Yao Sakurakoji is INSANE!

(i usually dun got for extreme fanservicey anime, but R+V was just too delightful not to fall in love with it ^o^ )

KKN, admittedly, is likely an acquired taste. Personally the characters are what won me over more than the story so I wouldn't blame you if you decided that you didn't like it.

Thank you all for you’re recommendations, opinions and for making this thread a lot bigger then I thought it would be. laugh

I found another good series that is rather funny - The Tower of DRUAGA, it’s not out in region one yet so I’ve been watching it on Youtube.
Hopefully when they get more episodes out they will bring it over.
