I used to watch anime on and off for the past two years, but I just recently really got into it. I don't really know of any anime out there besides the most mainstream ones (Dragon ball Z, Naruto, Bleach, etc) I would really appreciate it if some of the more experienced anime fans out there could suggest some series to me and show me what I've been missing. Feel free to suggest manga as well if you'd like, I enjoy both.

It would be helpful if you could tell us what kind of movies and TV shows you like. There's so much available that it would be hard to do more than scratch the surface, and it wouldn't help you much if each of us gave you a list of 20 different anime to try.

That being said, I'll try to recommend a few that I liked:

Summer Wars
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Living for the Day After Tomorrow (if you don't mind subtitles)
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (fantasy with an ancient asian setting)
Twelve Kingdoms (fantasy, with a lot of whiny characters, but very good)
Eden of the East (contemporary mystery/suspense)
Black Lagoon (a story about a group of smugglers operating in SE Asia)
Aria (slice of life, set in a city modeled on Venice, Italy)
Fruits Basket
Moon Phase

And if you like series like Bleach and Naruto, you might try either Fairy Tail or One Piece.

Cowboy Bebop
Full Metal Alchemist & Full Metal Alchemist: BrotherHood
Black Lagoon
Trigun
Full Metal Panic
Code Geass
Samurai Champloo
Eureka Seven(I'm only through half, but it's fantastic)
Irresponsible Captain Tylor(Never garnered much success but it's a great show)
The Big O
Wolf's Rain
Durarara!!
Level E

That's about all i can think of at the moment.

I remember back in 2009 I was just like you nativetan88,
it was The Banner of the Stars Trilogy that brought me into the fold.

Now I’m an addict..

Speaking of the Banner of the Stars Trilogy, it’s starting to go out of print.
> Crest of the Stars <
Banner of the Stars
> Banner of the Stars II <

You can still get Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars II here at Rightsuf.

You’d have to go to a place like Amazon ( and pay the price ) for Banner of the Stars.
I HIGHLY recommend the Trilogy, get it before it goes out of print.

> HEROIC AGE < is another Epic but intimate Space Opera I would HIGHLY recommend
this cheaper priced edition is about out ( 47 copies left at the time of this Post )
> my review of it <

How about these?

Soul Eater
D Grey Man
Death Note
Kenichi The Mightest Disciple

Those are some recent Shonen action type shows.

I also suggest that you make a list of what you liked about those shows you list, and maybe other shows you are considering.

Other than that I suggest these as well:

Birdie The Mighty Decode
School Rumble
Black Lagoon
Haibane Renmei
Slayers
