Does anyone else find it a bit interesting that some anime will incorporate songs in English into their shows? Do you have any particular favorites?

My favorite has to be the one episode of Maison Ikkoku which used Alone Again (Naturally) by Gilbert O'Sullivan as its OP theme. Almost a bit too depressing, even for the hopeless Godai but a great song nonetheless. smile

Any other greats?

I like it myself. I really loved the way Pioneer (not the Geneon they became later) used to create English versions of the opening and ending music in their very early dubs. It felt like they were going the extra mile compared to other U.S. anime licensors at the time. I am definitely enjoyed the english version of "I'm A Pioneer" from the 2nd Tenchi Muyo OAV series.

I remember hearing the Beatles tunes during Urusei Yatsura. Don't forget clones of english songs in anime. There's more than a few openings that have Queen's style (i.e. Big O)The first time I heard K.O.R's Dance in The Memories I thought, "this is Bananrama's I Heard a Rumor." Anyways, I wound up being a Meiko Nakahara fan.

There are sometimes when translating a song into English is a great move for the series; 'Clever' (one of the El Hazard ED themes) sounded great in English sung by Melissa Fahn and the chorus scene during the Christmas episode in Sister Princess also sounded fabulous. I also loved the concert scene late in 'Petite Princess Yucie', Those are just three examples though.

Then there are times like Funimation's release of 'Sasami: Magical Girls Club' where they translated every song into English and none of them sounded particularly good.

As a fellow follower of Sasami, none of the songs were good in Japanese. It was just more embarrassing when you can hear and understand it.

I'm a fan of music which fits the show. Those of you who have not had the opportunity to watch the opening of Licensed by Royalty, "Go Where No Ones Gone Before" by Billy Preston is absolutely genius. It also has a nearly flawless dub which is, in this fan's opinion, better than the Japanese version could ever hope to become in their fantasies.

I am also a big fan of the version of "Can't Stop Loving You" in the most recent remake of Metropolis. The mix of music and

is absolutely beautiful.

And the counterpoint: "Fly me to the Moon"
'nuf said.

I love Gankutsuou's ending theme "You Won't See Me Coming!".

MUCH better than the version of St. James Infirmary used in the film. Of course, no one can top Cab Calloway's version from "Betty Boop in Snow White." Crazy stuff!

[*]Queen's Flash versus
[*]Big O's opening

You may not have known, but the season 2 OP of 'Big O' totally riped the OP of the British/Gerry Anderson series 'UFO'.

You're right. I just checked both out. Often, I'll hear music in anime mimic certain band's style but Big O is less original. Too bad I never got to see the 2nd OP. I like it better.

Yeah, don't worry. You are not alone on this, the opening theme to this series and first ED is just plain terrible. However, the second English ED theme is actually a decent song and had I heard it on the radio with no knowledge of it being attached to an anime I honestly think I would've enjoyed it anyway. So points for that.

Funimation has always selectively dubbed certain songs from anime. A lot of the titles that got television airplay had dubbed songs attached to them and I know they've done it for previous series over the years. Having trouble thinking of an example at the moment though... someone fill in the blank for me.

Yikes, having a song translated and sung in english sounds like a nightmare, but if its the licensers having a good time doing it....I dunno.

I do prefer the songs in Sasami to those pseudo-pop/rock redo soundtracks.

Funny you should mention that-it didn't show up in Viz dubbed version due to licensing problems-mainly that the japanese never got one they just used it without permission-the version of MI that I have is laser disc sourced and thus contains the originial soundtrack.
