Yea my BD player just has a wireless adapter. My x360 is a new black one so it has built in wifi, I stream with it as well. So all I use the BD wifi for is to update it.

I do NOT recommend updating a bluray players firmware via the internet-use either a usb flashdrive or a burn a cd (depending on the brand) for updates. I have 2 bluray players-an older Samjunk and a new Panasonic-I use them strictly for watching blurays-nothing else. I have an htpc that I use for watching internet content on my tv. I used to have a Popcorn Hour A210 media player for that but when anime fansubbers switched to 10 bit encoding it didn't have the ability to play them so an htpc became my weapon of choice.

To each their own I suppose.

RCA doesn't update their site often from what I'm reading, so it's either via the player or nothing.

Well-wait until you brick your player with an online firmware update gone bad-much less chance of that happening with usb flash drive or cd updates.

I almost bricked my PS3 with one of Sony's flash drive updates. They actually goofed up on the update on their website, while the one via the online update was correct.

I have a friend that is a developer at Sony and he recommends going through the online updates. Their websites are manage by third party companies, while the online update is managed directly by Sony.

LOL!

Uh, no. Every time I turn on my Samjunk (love that, by the way, because it's true), there's always another update. I don't have to do anything but press the "Ok" option.

I wouldn't give up this wireless feature for anything, given how often these idiotic updates are required.

A lot of the updates on newer players are mostly software revisions for streaming content (e.g. netflix, hulu, vudu, etc.) while only a handful will actually affect bd playback.

Thankfully the technology has reached a point where most firmware updates don't take like 2 hours to do anymore (increasing the chances of bricking a system). Another key tip is to turn off HDMI-CEC control (bravia-link, viera-link, anynet, etc.) on the BD player before running the update. I would wager about 25% of bricked units during firmware updates result in people leaving that feature on and then turning off their TV while the update happens.

A friend of mine picked up a Samsung BD 1.1 player (~2008-2009) and didn't have to do an update until about 3 months ago. He had the original firmware installed but he finally got a movie that wouldn't play without an update... 3.5 years later.

I wish they would put the updates on the blu-ray movies, like how they do for the PS3. They put the most recent update on all the games.

It would be nice, but it would be really hard to do. Unlike the PS3, which is made by only one company (Sony). There are several makes and models of Blu-ray players and each one has its own unique version of firmware.

I do hope that the prediction made earlier (about re-releases) is true.
IE getting a separate DVD or Blu-Ray release.
Especially with several upcoming series that I am really interested in (Hellsing Ultimate for example).

Though in the case of Disney, there are DVD only versions of the Combo Packs, though they might be hard to find in regular stores (Target, Walmart, etc). I know The Secret World of Arrietty is supposed to be a Combo Pack, but is also getting a DVD version as well.
