Yeah, I might have to get the other 2 films in the series if I like this one enough.
Are you referring to the movie Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Corps. and the anime Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade?

Just got my Serial Experiments Lain set today and there are a few things that really piss me off about it-this is supposed to be a "super deluxe set" but crapamation is using those lovely "cut out" cases that provide zero protection for the discs inside-and I don't mind them putting all 13 episodes on 2 blurays but how about evening up the episode count between the 2 discs-like 6 on one and 7 on the other instead of 9 on one and 4 on the other?

I know that was odd, it was split up just fine on the DVD

Maybe the episode count is lower on the second disc to accomodate room for the special features.

That's because of the layers. Dual layered Blu-ray Discs (50GB) cost much more money to make than single layered BD (25GB). The cost difference is by a dollar or two. This information came from David Williams from Sentai.

Almost all of Funimation and Sentai releases that contain 12-13 episodes have one dual layered BD (first disc) and one single layered BD. If there are 14+ episodes, then they will use 2 dual layered BDs (see Sekirei season 2, DTB season 2/w OVA or HLP season 1 for examples).

The cost between a dual layered DVD (about 8GB) compared to single layered DVD (about 4GB) is only a few cents difference. This is why almost all DVDs these days are dual layered.

I'm assuming that one dual layer BD disc is cheaper than two single layer BD discs?

Yes!

Let's say that a single layered Blu-ray costs $3 to make, while a dual layered costs $5. You save a dollar if you use a dual-layered Blu-ray instead of two single layered discs.

Note: The numbers above are not the actual costs.

Pressed Blu-Rays are of course different from home burnable Blu-Rays, but if single layer vs. double layer is comparable there,
a dual layer disc could actually be more expensive than 2 single layer discs...
Home burnable Blu-Ray discs at a German webstore:
- Verbatim BD-R 25 GB box of 10: EUR 30 (~$39)
- Verbatim BD-R DL 50 GB box of 10: EUR 70 (~$91) (EUR 10 more expensive than 20 single layer ones!)
- Pioneer BD-R XL 100 GB just 1: EUR 35! That's flash memory/SSD prices or 3-5x the GB price of 2.5" USB HHDs for an optical disc!..

(Well, the above prices are probably one of the reasons there's some "print-on-demand" DVD titles, but no Blu-Ray "print-on-demand" titles yet...)

ugh, needed to tweak my post to work around a forum bug that prevented me from posting the text; have reported it by mail...
