I think it means that when you're listening to the Japanese language version, you can't turn the subtitles off. Or maybe it means that the subtitle text has been made a part of the video image, instead of residing in a separate file.

Yeah, it's the second one.
Some might go well it's in japanese only so who cares?
Well they're using some pretty iffy subs subs that's why.
Plus... it's just an overall cheap thing to do.
What irks me more is the cramming they're going to do with it.
You know the image quality is going to suffer for that.
Not Cool. mad

Hard subbing was very prevalent in the days of divx/xvid fansub encodes. Some of the very first subbed only anime dvds were also hardsubbed-the pratice is basically extinct now.

And god knows how many eps they crammed onto a disk.
I'd get it... But only if it's dirt cheap.

It works out to roughly 9 episodes per disc-that's about the amount of episodes you used to find on a hkdvd anime disc-I guarantee the video will look like crap.

Go for it! It's a total riot! You don't have to be a Go Nagai fan to enjoy it either; and if you are, you'll love it all the more. Furthermore, it's an excellent set; like all the NIS Premium Editions. But don't take my word for it. Here's a review at one of my favorite review sites THEM Anime Reviews:

Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up review @ THEM

Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up aka Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera is a fun romp. kiku says: "Go for it! Sit back, turn your mind off, and enjoy some righteous comedy gold."

Thanks, Kiku. smile The reason why I asked, is because I saw Rightstuf's notice that there's a counter on it now, and that there are no current plans for a standard release. So, I figure I should jump on it before I completely miss out. It sounds like something I'd really be into. laugh
