Question:

Can someone explain why the post 1960s Star Trek shows have red uniforms for command personnel? I'm not bashing the new shows, but I'm strictly old school, where red is engineering and gold (green) is command. I'm just curious as to why they were changed.

It's to hide the blood from the inevitable mortal wound received during an away mission.

I prefer the classic Trek uniform color scheme myself.

It was a behind-the-scenes decision made when The Next Generation was being created. The color change was noted on screen in an episode of Deep Space Nine, but no on screen explanation for the color switch has been made.

The "behind-the-scenes decision" is mainly what interests me. I just wondered why Gene & Co. thought it necessary.

Possibly something new for the new series? Maybe they thought that guys in green was just too...silly and decided on more masculine colors for command?
