I got back from lunch about thirty minutes ago. I went to my favorite Japanese restaurant here in Nashville, Goten. There are some other good places, such as Ichiban and Sam's Sushi Bar, but I prefer Goten. Today, I had chicken katsu with rice and clear soup, and for sushi I ordered a fried shrimp roll... heaven!

I've never tried cooking katsu at home, but I might make an attempt this weekend.

Oooh so jealous at the moment though I can't really complain. My friend has come to love eating sushi and hates eating alone so she has taken to making her the 'defacto dinner companion'. Not that I complain, I get to eat delicious sushi.

Last time we went I got to have some gyoza (I could eat gyoza every single meal for a week or more and not get sick of it), ebi, tamago, a couple of roles... mmmmmmm *drool*

I'd love to learn how to make even easy Japanese dishes at home.

I admit I've never really made authentic Asian cuisine. I do attempt to add a certain flair of Asia by shopping the Asian grocery section once in a while (no real Asian grocery store here frown ) but I'd definitely love to learn.

Lately, I've been experimenting with preparing my own sushi. I'm sticking with ingredients like avocado and lettuce, just to get practice. I want to try some cooked meat next, but I think I'll leave the sashimi to the professionals... especially the fugu. wink

It's not as good as "real" sushi, but it's fun to make.

"Dessert" sushi is also a blast to make, especially for kids (ok, I kinda thought it was fun too). Preparation and rolling is nearly identical except that you switch Fruit Rollups(TM) for the nori and Rice Crispy(R) cookies (while they're still soft and gooey) for the sushi rice and use whatever fillers you like: fruit flavored ropes, gummy fugus, orange slices, etc...basically whatever you can cut easily with a knife. Then roll it up on your sushi mat like you normall would, let cool then cut them up and have at them.

I take it you don't add vinegar to the rice crispies. wink

While I'm compelled to say that there are no hard rules for making dessert sushi, I think your presumption is a safe one. Salt is also probably right out although I've been trying to think up a replacement for Fruit Rollups that would pair better with a chocolate and/or peanut butter center. Blasphemy in some circles I'm sure...

I've thought about getting a bento box and wrapping it daily in a furoshiki. I wonder if people would think I was really weird for doing that.
