I've seen Gundam Wing, Seed, Seed Destiny and the newest one Gundam 00. Out of all of them my favorite is the newest one, of course there were 3 characters who got screen time and I couldn't figure out why(maybe to add a more human element?) unless they play a big role in season 2. The worst was Seed Destiny, I couldn't even stomach the first half of the series cause the main character was so irritating. For those 3 characters, well it seems after watching the ending of 00, it looks like the former boyfriend/girlfriend are on opposing sides, she joined our heros and he's still blaming them for what happened to his sister and the death of his girlfriends parents and her left hand as well as for their breakup.

My favorite is Gundam Wing, mostly because it was my first, and I think (for people that like any Gundam/mecha series anyway) the first exposure usually holds a special place for that person. My second place would go to 08th MS Team. Short but really well done.

1st off-let me say-I hate Gundam (and most giant mecha stuff)-but having said that I'd say Gundam Seed.

I'm partial to Gundam Wing, but I have not managed to finish 0083 yet.

The first one that I saw all the way through was Gundam Wing. Really like the opening and ending themes. Some of the characters got on my nerves and it seemed rather drawn out. Having said that, I am still nostalgic about it. I really liked Gundam Seed. It dragged too till the last few episodes and then got interesting, not to mention sad. The animation of Gundam 00 blew me away. At this point I don't have a favorite. I still have some series to see so I don't know why I am even posting.

G-Gundam or 08th MS, who are all these "Non-Gundam" fans that love Gundam Seed? Seriously, that series was the biggest load of convoluted crap since Metal Gear... At least Metal Gear was good though.

Well being the only ones that I managed to watch w/o feeling totally confused or repulsed at all of the potential yaoi shipping. I suppose you could say that G-Gundam and 08th MS Team are my "favorites".

I have yet to take a crack at the Gundam universe. Is there a recommended series that those who are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of Gundam lore can watch as a fairly stand-alone series while also getting a good "feel" for the mood and style of the franchise? Gundam Wing Gundam Seed Gundam 00 Take your pick! Gundam 0080, Gundam 0083 and Gundam The 08th MS Team could also work, but they are OVAs. G Gundam is also a standalone, but it's a bit unique compared to the others. Personally I would go with Gundam 00, since it's the newest one.

08th MS team is short, (12 or 13 episodes) and set in the UC timeline (the same timeline that the original series is set in.) It is a pretty good look, IMO, of what Gundam is all about (though perhaps a bit more sad than the other series.) It works as a stand-alone series just fine.
If you don't mind going in for a longer haul, I recommend Gundam Wing as a good starting point (50+ episodes if you count the movie/OVA Endless Waltz.) It is not set in the original UC timeline, but in its own timeline strictly for its series, so it acts as a complete stand-alone work while still keeping the "Gundam" feel to it.
I have not seen enough of Gundam Seed to pass judgment, and I have heard views of both loving it and hating it by people, so I really don't know either way on that one.

I own all the Gundam stuff except for G-Gundam and Superior Defender Gundam. I didn't like G (although my wife did) and didn't buy S.D. because it was for kids. I think all the series' have their good and bad points, but I think I like the latest, Gundam 00, best. The quality of the production gets better with each new series and 00 is very contemporary as well. Gundam is an acquired taste and I understand that some people don't like it, BUT I LOVE IT!

Gundam Seed - Both box sets are available but the first movie is only available on UMD (I'm a completest. This would drive me nuts). The movies are just compilations and only recommended to the extreme Gundam nuts like myself. Otherwise, just pretend that the movies don't exist and go for the two sets.

As far as the Gundam Wing sets go, you should be able to find the second box set available at some retailer for a normal price (Best Buy, FYE, etc.) I know I've seen it locally at a couple of locations so even if it is OOP it should still be easy enough to get a hold of. You could also check eBay to try and find a deal on it if no one else has it.

Thank you for the info. Now I just have to figure out if they're spindleboxes. I buy my anime from 2 sites mainly. That's kind of you to share that but linking to competitors is a bit of a no-no here for obvious reasons. I run the full gamut of online stores but I prefer to keep 80% or more of my purchases with TRSI when I can.

Bandai doesn't use StackPaks, they only use M-Lock bricks and LiteBox cases (14mm case; can hold up to six discs; some overlapping, but not stacked).

So these series are recommended for beginners as a quick way to get into the Gundam universe? Yes! I listed the ones that you can simply pick up and watch. After watching most of Gundam 00 now on Syfy (3 episodes to go). I recommend this one the most to beginners. There seem to be a lot of stand-alone series for the Gundam franchise. Getting away from the continuation after continuation and going for the independent (or stand-alone) series, is this something new to try to pull in new viewers? Yes and no! In Japan, it was to a certain extent. However, what created the switch was when Yoshiyuki Tomino allowed other directors to make Gundam series. Tomino sticked with one time line (Universal Century) and created loose continuation between the series, while the other directors didn't want to do that. Mainly, because they had new and unique ideas for the franchise. That's why they created alternate time lines and made them standalone.
