More About Maria Watches Over Us

The Maria Watches Over Us anime is based upon a series of novels - written by Oyuki Konno and illustrated by Reine Hibiki - that began in 1998 and spans 38 volumes. Short stories related to the series have been published in the shoujo (girls') magazine Cobalt, and a manga adaptation was serialized in the anthology magazine Margaret. The series' publisher, Shueisha, produced 14 drama CDs (featuring radio-style plays), and there are also several Internet radio plays, a live-action film adaptation and a spin-off novel series.

The anime adaptation of Maria-sama ga Miteru - also referred to by fans as "MariMite" - encompasses two, 13- episode TV seasons, a 5-episode OVA (original video animation) as its third season, and a 13-episode fourth season, which aired on Japanese television during 2009. All four seasons are licensed for English-speaking audiences by and available on DVD from Right Stuf's Nozomi Entertainment.

Maria Watches Over Us features animation by Studio DEEN (Fruits Basket, Gravitation, Rurouni Kenshin), scripting by Reiko Yoshida (ARIA, Boys Over Flowers, Story of Saiunkoku), and direction by Yukihiro Matsushita (Seasons 1-3; Blue Dragon, Sugar Sugar Rune) and Toshiyuki Kato (Season 4; Full Moon O Sagashite, CODE-E).

Fan Q&A with author Oyuki Konno

With the start of the fall semester upon us, there couldn't be a better time to revisit Lillian Girls' Academy and the world of Maria Watches Over Us!

A little while ago, Ms. Konno graciously took time out to select and answer some of your questions about the series!

Fan Question: Konno-sensei, thank you so much for the many wonderful hours that I have been able to spend enjoying the Maria-sama ga Miteru series.

Yumi's growth over the course of the books is one of the main attractions for me. What advice would you give Yumi when she graduates? - Erica F.

Ms. Konno's Answer: Hmm, what advice...? I don't think I'll know until it actually happens!

Fan Question: Of all the characters from the first two seasons and OVAs, which do you identify with the most? - Natasha W.

Ms. Konno's Answer: Really, you could say that all the characters represent me, since they were all created from my own mind. It would be too hard to pick just one!

Fan Question: Did you have all of the basic plot points of the series planned in advance? Or were there points in the novels where you were surprised at how they turned out? - Sean G.

Ms. Konno's Answer: I started with a general outline and just molded the story book by book.

Since I knew roughly what was going to happen, there weren't any major surprises, but the details sometimes changed while I was writing. Sometimes, the characters just went out of control!

Fan Question: Which character is the hardest to write? - Redmond A.

Ms. Konno's Answer: Characters who don't show their emotions much... Those are the hardest to write.

Fan Question: Why do you think the series has so much of a following even after over 30 volumes of novels and 10+ years? - John M.

Ms. Konno's Answer: Because there are still people out there who can relate to my work. As long as they exist, I hope Maria will continue to have a following!

Fan Question: Was the character of Sato Sei based on a real person? - Shane M.

Ms. Konno's Answer: Sometimes I use my friends or myself as the basis for characters, but most of them, like Sato Sei, are simply created from scratch.

Fan Question: How close exactly are Yuki and Kashiwagi? Does their bond reflect Yumi and Sachiko's bond, or is it something less deep? - Cassandra F.

Ms. Konno's Answer: I've recently started a sister series to Maria-sama, called Buddha Also Watches Over Us. The answer to your question might become clear in this series. (To tell the truth, I'm still not sure!)
