Happy Birthday, Astro Boy!

Although the story of Astro Boy has been with us and inspired fans around the world for more than 50 years, did you know that April 7, 2013 is actually Astro Boy's 10th birthday?!

According to Frederik L. Schodt, the author of The Astro Boy Essays:

"In Tezuka's original story line, Atom was not born in 1951 but over fifty years in the then-distant future. At first Tezuka merely wrote that Atom was born in 2003. Later he indicated that it was April 7, 2013. Not until many years later, when he apparently needed to pin down the birthday of his increasingly famous character did he (or his editors) combine the two dates and choose April 7, 2003."

On April 7, 2003, the city of Takadanobaba celebrated Astro Boy's birth by changing the Takadanobaba train station's departure signal to the Astro Boy theme song. Takadanobaba even created two large murals to honor Astro Boy's birthday!
