Earthquakes, Tsunamis Strike Japan & Pacific - How You Can HelpPosted on: Friday, March 11, 2011
Earlier today (March 11, 2011), a magnitude 8.9 earthquake -- one of the strongest earthquakes in recorded history -- took place just off the coast of the Japanese city of Sendai (~189 miles from Tokyo). It could be felt throughout Japan (including Tokyo and Osaka) and mainland Asia, and it triggered a series of aftershock earthquakes, many as strong as magnitude 6.0. It also triggered massively destructive tsunamis that have devastated the Sendai area and are also battering many locations along the Pacific Ocean, including Hawaii, parts of North America's West Coast, and the South American coast. Preliminary reports suggest casualties in the hundreds, if not more.
Everyone affected by this tragedy is in our thoughts and prayers. If you want to do something to help, Right Stuf encourages you to donate to one of the following:
Red Cross' International Services (http://stuf.it/redcrossintl) or the International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies (www.ifrc.org). Visit www.redcross.org and donate to Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to automatically make a $10 donation.
Also, the Japan Society of New York has established a dedicated earthquake relief fund, which will in turn support Japanese and American non-profits that will directly help the victims.
