Nabari no Ou DVD Complete Series Part 2 (Hyb)

If…/then with Christy

As with many other Akira Toriyama fans, I was totally psyched when the uncut Dragon Ball season 1 set was announced. As soon as I had the chance, I marathoned my way through the series and found myself just as captivated by the animated versions of Goku, Bulma and the rest of the gang as I’ve always been with their manga counterparts.

Dragon Ball is chock-full of action, adventure, comedy and heart, and it’s difficult not to like Goku even when his naiveté borders on the completely and utterly ridiculous – which is actually most of the time. He’s just such a fun character to follow. That’s really the best word to describe the entire season – fun. It never gets too heavy – which is what makes marathoning 31 episodes so easy. The series flies by amidst all the humor and action, so when you reach the last disc, you find yourself wondering what happened to the last several hours.

If you can’t wait for the release of the second season box set, but still want to continue journeying with Goku, you can check out the Dragon Ball BIG Edition Graphic Novels, or you could just skip ahead in the timeline entirely and move on to Dragon Ball Z, with the uncut Dragon Ball Z Season 1 or the upcoming, highly anticipated Dragon Ball Z Season 1 Dragon Box.

Someone looking for a little more romance mixed in with all the kinetic fight scenes and comedy has loads of options, but of all of them, one of my favorite romantic, fantasy shounen series has always been Rumiko Takahashi’s Inu Yasha. It’s not a short storyline, clocking in at 167 episodes, and to be fair, the ending was originally pretty ambiguous, but this is definitely a great time for anime fans to either experience the series for the first time or revisit it fondly - the series is set to receive real closure as Inu Yasha: The Final Act is currently airing and available via legal streams in North America. You can find the first seven seasons via box sets that regularly find their way into our weekly specials.

Like Dragon Ball, Inu Yasha also follows a band of loveable characters on a quest to collect a powerful magical item, but the series’ focus on Inu Yasha and Kagome’s relationship is apparent from the very beginning. Though the duo is the heart of the story, there are tons of others rounding out the cast, and there are plenty of arcs following those secondary characters. It’s not hard to find yourself rooting for those who drift in and out of the spotlight just as much as you do the two leads.

If you’re happy with your shounen “romance-lite,” then another good option might be the series Saiyuki. The series follows Sanzo, Goku, Gojyo and Hakkai on a mission to stop the resurrection of a powerful demon king. Along the way they are, of course, faced by a myriad of lesser problems and villains, which they dispatch using both battle skills and snark. The series is heavy on action, with a good dose of comedy and drama mixed in.

Do you have a suggestion for fans of Dragon Ball? Make sure you head to our Anime Today discussion forums on AnimeToday.com, and make a post in the Dragon Ball If…/Then thread.

Or, if you want to get a head start on making recommendations for next time, we’ve also posted the thread for our next If…/Then feature, which will cover Right Stuf / Nozomi’s own Gakuen Alice DVD Collection.

You’ll also find rec threads for other potential If…/Then segments.

We love getting feedback, and you never know -- you just might hear your recommendations on a future episode.
