Episode run down:
It is amazing how fast this summer has flown by here at Right Stuf. All our local sweet corn vendors have started selling pumpkins instead of sweet corn, the leaves are starting to fall, and its a great time to start thinking about hanging out indoors during the cool evenings and watching some anime.
Later in this episode, we’re going to talk with Stephanie Sheh. She has a sizable list of voice acting credits, and recently revisited her role of Eureka in Eureka Seven: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers. We’ll talk about how her experience in our industry prior to being a voice actor influenced her, the challenges of revisiting a character in a “retelling” rather than a “continuation” of the story, and other characters she’d like to revisit.
The music for this episode is from JapanFiles.com’s mama manner, interphone and birdless CDs by mothercoat. We’d like to thank JapanFiles.com for letting us feature music from their CDs, a full list with the times each song was played will be posted at the bottom of this episode’s show notes at AnimeToday.com.
This episode is kicking off with Chad and What’s Hot in the World of Anime and Manga, then Shawne will tells you how to Blast Off with Bargains on Right Stuf releases. If you’re a gamer, we also have a new contest where you’ll have a chance to win a copy of Suguri Perfect Edition game.

If…/then with Christy
As with countless other fans, I’ve been anticipating the first box set release of Nana for ages, now. I wondered if the animated versions of characters I’ve come to know over the years would live up to all my expectations, and I’m happy to say that they are as complex and fascinating as I’d hoped.
Nana centers around two young women who happen to have the same name and who meet through chance and develop a friendship that will ultimately affect the rest of their lives. Hachi and Nana are at times infuriating and at others sympathetic, along with everything in between. They are multifaceted, layered characters and are not necessarily the way they seem when we first meet them.
The series combines drama, comedy and excellent music and results in a highly entertaining show. By the end of the first box set, we only scratch the surface of what’s to come, leaving fans longing for the next installment.
If you aren’t already following the manga, I would strongly recommend starting. Yazawa’s art and storytelling is awesome and definitely worth following in conjunction with the anime. As with many manga series, certain scenes and characters are given a little more time to flesh out and sink in. And if you’re of a fairly impatient nature, like me, you can read ahead of where the first Nana box set ends, as you wait for next to street.
Nana also received the live-action treatment a few years ago, which resulted in a stylish movie starring Aoi Miyazaki as Hachi and singer Mika Nakashima as Nana O. The film also boasts a couple of pretty fabulous songs penned by Hyde of L'Arc~en~Ciel fame.
If you weren’t already familiar with Ai Yazawa’s work and enjoyed the visuals and overall feel of Nana, you definitely want to give Paradise Kiss a chance. ParaKiss follows Yukari as she goes from being an average high-school girl, to a young woman who knows her own mind and makes her own decisions. These changes are catalyzed when she meets a group of colorful young fashion designers who make her question the way she sees the world.
ParaKiss is about growing up, navigating first loves and finding and following dreams, all told with Yazawa’s familiar, stylish flair.
If you were drawn to the rock vibe of Nana, but could have used a little more romance, you might want to give Mayu Shinjo’s manga, Sensual Phrase, a read. Filled with page after page of drama, the story follows the lives of a young woman and fledgling songwriter named Aine and Sakuya, the attractive lead singer of a popular rock band, Lucifer. The relationship that quickly develops between the two is filled with ups and downs, drama, and a high level of intensity, which makes the volumes fly by.
Do you have a suggestion for fans of Nana? Make sure you head to our Anime Today discussion forums on AnimeToday.com, and make a post in the Nana If…/Then thread.
Or, if you want to get a head start on making recommendations for next time, we’ve also posted the thread for our next If…/Then feature, which will cover the recently released Uncut Dragon Ball Season 1.
You’ll also find rec threads for other potential If…/Then segments.
We love getting feedback, and you never know -- you just might hear your recommendations on a future episode.
