Devil May Cry DVD Complete Collection (Hyb)

If…/then with Christy

Our very own recently re-released, remastered edition of the space comedy The Irresponsible Captain Tylor TV Series is a must-see for both fans of the show, and for anime fans who perhaps haven’t had the chance to see it quite yet.

Justin Ueki Tylor is a man who just wants to live a comfortable, lazy life. For some reason, he thinks joining the military’s United Planets Space Force will be a means to that end – despite the fact that they’re on the verge of war! That kind of brilliant reasoning combined with an unparalleled streak of good luck – one so good that it even manages to get him promoted to the rank of Captain – is something inherent to the character throughout the series and provides viewers with loads of slapstick comedy.

It occasionally even makes me wonder if he’s not at least a little bit aware of the things he’s up against.

It’s an incredibly fun and comic romp through space, with a few dramatic turns, and it’s definitely worth checking out the newly remastered transfer. It’s significantly clearer and brighter and gives the show a fresh feel.

If you enjoyed The Irresponsible Captain Tylor TV Series, you definitely want to pick up the newly remastered Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA, which gives Tylor fans a new set of comical mishaps and space adventures to follow. While it still has the zany sense of humor found in the original anime, there are definitely moments when the show explores far more dramatic aspects of the Tylor universe. So if you were longing to see another side of your favorite crew members, the OVA is your chance.

Like Tylor, the series Lost Universe also manages to blend elements of humor with science fiction. The slapstick savvy team behind the Slayers franchise also helmed Lost Universe’s space adventure, and both shows definitely have the same ability to flow from moments of laugh-out-loud funny situations to heart-tugging ones.

The lead characters, Kane Blueriver and Millie, are far more adept at journeying through space than Tylor seems to be, but that doesn’t stop them from getting into outlandishly entertaining scrapes – some of which even come with chicken suits – don’t ask.

The show moves along quickly, and the characters are quirky and likable.

As always, for fans looking for a different perspective, our forum members are happy to share their suggestions.

GreenGel recommends that fans looking for comedy with a deeper sci-fi storyline check out Martian Successor Nadesico.

And zrdb also recommends Planetes as well as sci-fi adventure series, Geneshaft.

Martian Successor Nadesico and Planetes, as well as a number of other titles suggested on the forums, are available in North America.

To view all of the recommendations, or provide some of your own, head to our Anime Today discussion forums on, and make a post in the Irresponsible Captain Tylor If…/then thread. You’ll also find rec threads for other potential If…/then segments.

We love getting feedback, and you never know -- you just might hear your recommendations on a future episode.
