As a dominion of the Empire the newly acquired territory was renamed Area 11. The rights of its citizens were severely limited and an economic depression followed for the Japanese, now known as Elevens.

Just as things seemed at their bleakest one man chose to stand up and fight, the masked crusader Zero. Leading his Order of Black Knights, Zero instigated a full scale revolution against Britannia culminating in one final battle, the Black Rebellion. Heavy casualties were seen by both sides but ultimately Britannia stood the victor. A year later, with Zero executed, a forced state of peace settles over Area 11. The rights of the Elevens remain limited, but with no one to lead them and the defeat during the Black Rebellion hanging over them, the Japanese people remain under the boot of Britannian oppression with no hope to overcome. Will someone new rise to lead them?

Fullmetal Alchemist: Premium OVA Collection DVD

If…/then with Christy

Previously, I’ve had a fair amount of trouble differentiating between all the recent shows featuring princesses in their titles, but when I heard fans talking about Murder Princess and its fantasy trappings, I knew that it would a series I could totally get into.

The story follows a princess and a bounty hunter who, in a moment of life-threatening danger, experience a body swap. Once their souls are exchanged, it is up to Falis to keep them both alive. With her swordplay skills and the aid of her companions, she battles to keep the world’s long-dormant, mystical power and technology from being revealed and used for evil.

Fantasy fans have definitely shown a lot of interest in the title, and even if you don’t know a lot about the series, it’s a six episode OVA, so you easily watch it all in one go with a free afternoon.

In the end, it was a fun, very quickly paced show that easily fed my love for fantasy stories.

While I was watching, I couldn’t help but think of another series I’m currently following: Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. Moribito also features a fascinating and skilled warrior, who finds herself drawn into a political plot.

Balsa is one of my favorite characters from recent years. She has an incredibly rich back-story and her motivations are truly intriguing. Her strong, fierce character along with the art and animation, music and all the twists and turns of the story, have made all the released episodes fly by.

In addition to amazing action sequences, Moribito is a fantasy that has a strong emotional center that easily pulls in viewers all the way from the beginning of the series.

I’ve also always been a fan of fantasy series that skillfully blend humor with action and drama, so some of the clever, comedic moments of Murder Princess ended up being scenes that have stuck with me.

Though it leans more to the humorous side of the spectrum, the Slayers series offers fans a similar blend of storytelling. Lina Inverse is a smart aleck-y sorceress who cares more about bounties and filling her bottomless-pit of a stomach than just about anything else, but somehow she ends up surrounded by a team of sidekicks who join her in her misadventures

At times hilarious, while at others truly dramatic, Lina and her fellow travelers face off against foes of every caliber – from hapless to seemingly unbeatable – and each battle brings them closer – both to one another as comrades and to answers that they each seek.

For fans looking for a different perspective, our forum members are always happy to share their suggestions.

GreenGel recommends that fans of action packed series featuring strong, female leads check out the Read or Die OVA. If you’re after something a little darker (and with a lot more blood), GreenGel also suggests Claymore for its supercharged action.

Manga4micah thinks fans should definitely give the heroine laden Fate/Stay Night a chance.

These titles, as well as a number of others made on the forums, are available in North America.

To view all of the recommendations, or provide some of your own, head to our Anime Today discussion forums on AnimeToday.com, and make a post in the Murder Princess If…/then thread. You’ll also find rec threads for other potential If…/then segments.

We love getting feedback, and you never know -- you just might hear your recommendations on a future episode.
