Ever 17 CDROM Game (Windows) (S)
Marc Frost - May 22 2006 Rating: Wonderful! A Fantastic visual-novel game! Before playing this game I heard a lot of hype about it. When I first started I didn't think it lived up to the hype. I admit, the beginning is a little slow because there is a lot to seyup and explain. However, it gets really good. The characters really grew on me and the story is fantastic. The game offers a lot of replayability because you can choose two different characters to play as. While some parts of the story are the same, it's almost like two games in one. Both paths take apporximately ten hours to complete and are equally enjoyable. There are several different endings. In addition, there are a ton of extras. There are a lot of album pics to open up and they can be used as wallpapers. There are also screen savers, a jukebox mode and more! The only downside here is that there are several spelling errors and typos (the translation is excellent, though). In my opinion, these are easy to overlook because it shines in every other aspect. It's a really great game, definitely worth it! David M. Owens - Aug 25 2006 modred@charter.net Rating: Wonderful! The One Must-Have Visual Novel I've written a couple reviews of Ever 17 to try and drum up support. I hope it works, both because I'd like more visual novels released here by Hirameki, who do an admirable job with them, and because Ever 17 is probably the best out of all the visual novels available in the U.S., and I believe everyone should have the joy of playing it. The plot is simply incredible, and has to be played through to be believed. Beyond the basic synopsis offered on the product page, you'll learn about the five girls trapped with you in LeMU, and also about the other male trap-ee (depending on whom you decide to play as). There's tension, drama, excitement, humor and sorrow as the days and nights pass trapped in LeMU, offering a wide variety of experiences as you play. Once you finish the initial four storylines (Sora and Tsugumi in Takeshi's story, and Sara and You during the Kid's plot), you can go through the final time and use some of your knowledge to jump onto Coco's path: the 5th, final, and most amazing story. Unlike many bishoujo visual novels, however, the storylines aren't necessarily isolated...and that's part of what makes Ever 17 such an awesome, awesome game. The stories interweave together, and as you play you'll be piecing parts of the plot together as you try to figure out just why LeMU suddenly was evacuated, why you're locked hundreds of feet underwater, and why nobody is coming to help after days pass. Ever 17 has some translation errors (though not as many as some of Hirameki's earlier games) but I think they've handled a very complex and complicated storyline very well and kept many of the points intact or trans-"cultured" well-enough to understand. The initial batch of CDs had some voice file problems, but those have since been fixed also. While it contains some mature parts and some of the discussions are pretty deep and philosophical, Ever 17, like all of Hirameki's games, is "all ages" - meaning no hentai/erotic scenes. The bottom line for the discerning fan - there's a heavily implied love scene, but no questionable pictures or descriptions. For the discerning fan squeamish about censorship - like the first Hourglass of Summer release in Japan, Ever 17 was hentai-free, so Hirameki did NOT in any way cut scenes out. Couple the masterfully-written stories together with fantastic voice acting from notables such as Souichirou Hoshi, Yuu Asakawa, Hisayo Mochizuki, and Kana Ueda, toss in tons of extras and goodies such as wallpapers and system sounds, add in some memorable and varied music and a really well-choreographed opening movie, and you have what amounts to the absolute best visual novel available in the US, hands-down. If you're a fan of visual novels or just solid, excellent stories, you CANNOT pass this game up! |
