Don't judge early.
I have seen the first two episodes of Diebuster, which Bandai Visual is releasing here under the title of Gunbuster 2. The episodes themselves are clearly the inheritance of the original, with director Kazuya Tsurumaki (Gunbuster dir. Anno's assistant on Evangelion) keeping much in line with the visual style that he established with FLCL. Enokido's script is solid, as usual, and Sadamoto's character designs are as bizarrely intriguing as ever.

I have heard of some critique of Bandai Visual for their domestic release plans for this sequel. The price tag, at $40 per 2 episode disc, may seem high to some consumers. However, this is CHEAP compared to the Japanese releases. OVA series, in Japan, are often released "per episode," and have a retail price at the same point as a normal anime 2-3 episode DVD. Top wo Narae 2, Diebuster, was released in this manner in Japan, with each disc retailing at 5800 yen, a price of just under $50. We in the US are getting the series at LESS THAN HALF the Japanese price, so rather than critique Bandai Visual, we should thank them for licensing another GAINAX project. (Their first one in years that I actually care about, too.)

Worth it...but if you want to wait for it to show up on the Weekly Specials...
go right ahead.

I personally could not wait to finish Gunbuster(another perfect show) to start G2. From the beginning it is nonstop visual and audio orgasms all around. And I don't even have HDTV or surround sound, just 2 extra speakers. This is one of the greatest shows of recent memory. Even though I don't approve the director of this show directing the EVA Re:build(sp? who cares) movie 1, it's still beyond awesome.

This is also one of the few anime where you can brag to your friends(if you have any. If not just carve some out of soap, if you're lazy just steal someone's brick) that you purveyed a giant robot perform a death punch to a space monster's uterus.
