Death Note Graphic Novel 1 (200 pgs)
Ada G. Palmer - May 3 2005 Rating: Wonderful! Genius and mass-murder... deservedly called the best new manga this year. “With great power comes great… evil.” DEATH NOTE, the new project by the artist of Hikaru no Go (though a different writer), has been discussed for months, both by American and Japanese manga/anime magazines, as one of the best new things coming out in Japan this year. Running in the Japanese version of Shounen Jump alongside titles like Naruto and One Peace, Death Note is conspicuous in being a rigorously psychological and intellectual title, a battle of wits between super-geniuses instead of the usual battle of muscle. The premise of the manga is so original that I am not willing to reveal it in a public review, but the tone is extremely dark with fascinating treatments of evil, mass-murder and the power to kill, and their effects on individuals, on societies and on the global community. Death Note does not fall into any of the standard anime genres, coming closest to the detective/master-thief genre, but if I had to compare it to other titles I would compare it to the charismatic political drama of Sanctuary, or possibly to the later real-world social dramas of Osamu Tezuka, works like Adolf and Ayako which explored the effects of war and mass-murder on the world community. This is not light reading - be prepared to strain your brain keeping up with the machinations of the main players as, for once, geniuses are really written like geniuses. As with most serious series, the characters are seductively charismatic, the plot-twists are wholly unpredictable, and the cliffhangers are utter agony. The art is excellent, with very clean and polished faces and outstanding expression work, quite unlike the rougher days of the early Hikaru no Go manga and more similar to the Hikaru no Go anime art. So, if you feel up to taking on a top-quality drama full of evil, charisma, mass-murder, cunning and agonizing cliffhangers, don’t miss the best new title on this fall’s manga release chart: DEATH NOTE. This is the best manga i've read so far. what i like about most is how many twists and turns there are in the stort. you might think one thing, but it actually turns out to be a whole other thing that you would never expect. I just recently picked this volume up here from the site. The manga itself was in excellent condition. It's storyline was rather interesting, having to do with a shinigami (A japanese grim reaper if you will) who happens to drop a notebook into the human world. When a name is written in this notebook, that person dies. When a young man discovers the book and it's abilities. He brings it on himself to rid the world of murders and criminals. Despite the world's police banding together to undercover all these deaths. It kept me wanting for more throughout the entire book. I will defiantely pick up another volume, I'd highly recommend it. |
