Katara and Sokka, a brother and sister from the Southern Water Tribe, discover a twelve-year-old boy frozen in an iceberg. Katara wonders if this boy is the Avatar whom the world has been waiting for for a hundred years. Of course, his enemies in the Fire Nation have also been waiting.

Prince Zuko, a young Firebender whose mission in life is to capture the Avatar, tracks Aang down to the Southern Water Tribe village where Katara and Sokka live.

Aang is eager to take Sokka and Katara to the Air Temple where he was raised. But upon arrival, it becomes apparent that the temple is not at all how Aang remembers it. Deserted and destroyed Aang finally realizes that everyone he knew before is now 100 years old or dead. All the same, the Air Temple unlocks some of the secrets of the Avatar and Aang leaves with a new purpose... to save the world.

Aang and his companions fly to the Island of Kyoshi, where Aang is revered by all the townfolks. While Aang is caught up in his new celebrity status, the Fire Nation attacks and they need the help of the town's female warriors - including a brave girl named Suki - to rescue the village from going up in flames.

Aang's skills as the Avatar are put to the test when he attempts to rescue a village from a monster from the spirit world. He fails miserably, and Sokka is kidnapped in the process. But when he accidentally steps into the spirit world, he gains knowledge and experience. Will that be enough to bring peace back to the village?
