Maison Ikkoku DVD Box Set 4 (Hyb) (eps 37-48)
David Lin - Nov 8 2004 davidlinmd@yahoo.com Rating: Wonderful! HOO-AHHH!!! It's only 11/8/04, and I got it! Let me preface by saying I think this series is superlative; I feel it must be the most touching love story ever put on film. Ever. This box set contains some important episodes to the overall storyline. In terms of technical issues, the subbing is good, and no lines go untranslated (that I really noticed...I think someone may have mumbled something while someone else was speaking, but it wasn't important and wasn't really noticeable...unless you've watched it like 6 times like me). The film quality is also great...off of original laserdisc, I figure. I didn't listen to the dubs, though this is this first time that these episodes have been released dubbed by Viz, I think. To me, the original voice actors' work in 1987-88 are the voices of the characters forever. If the people came to life, I would expect them in real life to sound like the voice actors. The different beginning and endings were also included ("suki-sa" and the many different endings including "fantasy"). Translational quality is still good. I note that Viz hasn't tried to translate word-for-word in the past, opting instead for somewhat more "english-friendly" translations, which is a reasonable administrative choice. This hasn't changed in the current episodes. But the thoroughness of the translations (no main dialogue goes untranslated) seems to me to be what is most important. I hate it when an important line goes untranslated, and I end up making up something in my head to keep the story flowing. Makes me wanna learn Japanese. But these translations are thorough...as far as I can tell, I've never had that problem. So...I thoroughly appreciate and enjoy this new installment. Here's to all the episodes of this beautiful series being released on DVD...for many generations to enjoy. Toren Smith - Mar 11 2005 7the-9tn1@spamex.com Rating: Wonderful! The best romantic comedy ever I've been a huge fan of MI since the days it was still being published in the weeklies in Japan--I even remember rushing out to get the final episode the day it came out! The TV anime was well done and I'm enjoying the heck out of these releases. The dubbing is not very good, alas, but that's of no consequence as the subtitles are excellent. My only complaint is that the first few episodes on this volume have wayyyy too much edge enhancement and it sends my TV into fits. It clears up by the end of the first disk but really, someone should have noticed and remastered the affected episodes. Waiting anxiously for volume 5! --Toren Purple Orange - Jun 11 2005 Rating: Wonderful! One of the best anime series I've ever seen!! I know that everyone says how wonderful this series is-know what? They are absolutly right. I agree with Lin about the sub vs dub, I have only watched this subbed (although I normally only watch dubs), the voice actors are so in synch with the characters (especially Akemi) that I wouldn't watch it in any other language. Which is ok cause I own the whole series. Must see and own anime!! If you don't watch this at least once-I feel sorry for you. |
