Recent reviews of titles here: Hana Yori Dango Final: The Movie DVD (S) LiveActionMatthew Sablan - Dec 30 2009 Rating: Pretty good! M.I.A. So here is the movie to the Japanese t.v. series. This is/was a great end to the series and I prefer the ending in this to the one in the manga just because it felt like you got more from their relationship. The only problem....WHERE ARE THE FIRST AND SECOND SEASONS TO THIS SHOW. Why release the movie and the seasons first. Odd. I recommend atleast watching this show, but I'll wait to buy since the series itself is m.i.a. Orphen DVD Complete Collection (Hyb) (Seasons 1-2) K M. T - Dec 31 2009 Rating: Pretty good! Good graphics, action, story, and characters. Season One story and plot are excellent, but the English version doesn't do the story justice. After watching it in Japanese, I can recommend the subtitled version. English version takes away from the heart of the characters, and is not serious enough (makes the characters almost clownish) for the story. Season Two, well, not sure who was steering the ship in the first few episodes, seems like they got off track and went for a younger audience. Lots of silliness. Latter part of Season Two is better, getting back to real plot and action, and bringing things full circle. Animation is good and action sequences are well done. Opening and closing animations in both seasons have lots of great stuff, but none of it appears in any of the eps. Main drawback to Season One is the music. It's the same in every ep and does nothing to contribute to enhancing the magical content of the story. Music is better in Season Two, but is still recycled from ep to ep, and isn't consistent with the theme of magic and sorcery. All in all, I love the characters and the stories, (loved them much more in their original language), as well as the animation and the action. Not having read the manga, I am ready to give that a try and see how consistent the series is with the original stories. RahXephon DVD Complete Collection (Hyb) Lolita Fielder - Dec 31 2009 Rating: Wonderful! Love it but movie SUCKS!!!!!!!!! I am not a mecca fan but I have to say I loved this one but the movie i could not watch more than 10 min. just seem like the samething to me but when i have looked other people agreed with me go story line don't get me wrong it took me a while i was lost for a good bit. I got but wanted to know why they had to take so long to get the point. Unlike so many anime in the past this has a good ending if anyone know like me ANIME leaves a person hanging when it comes to ending but not this one. Petite Cossette, Le Portrait de DVD (Hyb) J Green - Dec 31 2009 Rating: Not all that good. It just wasn't that good.........! I really had to forcee myself to watch this-the characters didn't interest me, the story was disjointed and incomprehensible, the artistic style was generic-in other words-I simply didn't care for it at all. Angel Sanctuary DVD (Hyb) LInda Boatman - Jan 1 2010 lindab@keasler.cm Rating: Pretty good! A tragic story of forbidden love told with beautiful artwork and animation. While God sleeps, the most powerful Angel in heaven since Lucifer, Alexiel, rebels against the other Angels because their actions have become impure and defends a group of demons who have turned against Lucifer. While engaged in this battle, Alexiel, to save her brother Rosiel from madness and death, uses forbidden magic to seal him in a place she creates on Earth. In doing this she sacrifices all her power and is captured by her fellow angels and sentenced to the worst punishment in heaven—the separation of body and soul. Her body is sealed in crystal and her soul is sentenced to be reincarnated on earth over and over and each life is cursed to face pain and violent death. Her most recent reincarnation, Setsuna, a teen aged boy, is haunted by strange visions and unaccountable surges of power. He is deeply in love with his biological sister and she returns those forbidden feelings. The demons and angels have seen the stirrings of awakening of the powerful Alexiel in this human boy and hungrily gather to wage war. This story does dwell on the incestial relationship between Setsuna and his sister and the same feelings Rosiel has for his sister Alexiel. This anime is not for those who are uncomfortable with this subject and how these feelings and the resulting consequences are explored. I found the story line to be a bit choppy and to really understand what is happening, it helps to have read the manga. The artwork is beautiful. The animation is first rate. The main character, Setsuna, is a true tragic character. Doomed to live out the curse of pain and death placed on the Alexiel and the people her re-incarnation comes in contact with. There is just one seed of hope that love—even forbidden love--can conquer fate. NOTE: The theology of the story is totally incorrect. I keep in mind that it is fiction. Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino DVD Complete Series (Hyb) Mike C. Dixon - Jan 1 2010 mdixonatbakerst@msn.com Rating: Wonderful! Loved it but why? The GUNSLINGER GIRL series is one of the most disturbing I've run into. It's right up there with TEXHNOLYZE and that's saying something. The science to do most of what's been done to these kids exists; not all, but most. That's what's disturbing. What's good is how the whole rest of the series is constructed. These are people who develop over time, including the cyborg kids. The art is consistantly good. The writing is superior; there are almost no cringe-worthy bits of dialogue. My two cents worth: Somebody needs to come along and deliver Claes from the hands of the medicos. She's wasted as an experimental subject. All of the others are specialists; I see her as a generalist - able to take on more than 'shoot and scoot' missions. Her intellect is up to the task and her need on the personal level is off the chart. Her handler would have to be the same, plus empathetic since, if I remember correctly, the cyborgs can't imprint twice. Let's get this kid off the operating table and back into what she was designed to do, no matter how reprehensible it is. Spice and Wolf Season 1 DVD Complete Season 1 (Hyb) Mike C. Dixon - Jan 1 2010 mdixonatbakerst@msn.com Rating: Wonderful! A special series. I really like this one. It's not a rehash of old lycanthropy material. The character design is on a par with LAST EXILE and I don't often get to say that. The story is pretty good, as well and looks like it could develop into something even better. Will I buy the next set? Sure I will. Toward the Terra DVD Complete Collection (S) - Anime Legends Carolyn Thomas - Jan 2 2010 Rating: Pretty good! Great sci-fi series, a must see Sci-fi and Shojo are two genres that rarely mix, but when they do, the result is almost always something unique, original, and engaging that usually involves psychics to some degree. Toward the Terra has all of this and does it well. This 2007 series was based on a late 70s manga that had already gotten a movie of it made in the 80s, so one might expect the whole thing to feel stretched out given that neither of the other versions are particularly long, but the story really doesn't feel either rushed or stretched. It moves at a blistering pace to be sure and something is always happening to further the plot, but it never feels too fast either. My one complaint is with some of the characters who don't feel like they get developed as much as they should be or that they get developed off screen, but the story, setting, music, and interesting character interactions more than make up for it. My one major complaint is that this is one of the victims of the wave of sub-only releases. The subs are still good and are legible without being too big or long, but I wish Bandai would get back to dubbing things. The manga that the series is based off of is a shonen, but this series still feel more sci-fi shojo to me. Baccano! DVD Complete Series (Hyb) Rustin B. Meek - Jan 3 2010 rustin1990@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! refreshing!! great characters and soundtrack! its a bit confusing at first but it all works out. lots of action, a little comedy, and more than a hint of gore. simply addicting.. left me wanting more i recommend it to anyone Palace DVD Box Set (S) Standard Edition LiveAction Christine Szwech - Jan 4 2010 WickedMommy@comcast.net Rating: Wonderful! Do you believe in fairytales? Having grown up watching aninme....I fell into my love of Kdramas when my daughter was born. This is a wonderful, charming, funny, sweet romance. It is set in modern times, if Korea still had a King in the palace. The buildings, costumes & old world culture is really cool. The meeting & sometimes clash of the old meeting new in this tale leads to some pretty funny moments. If you are new to watching Kdramas. This is a wonderful place to start. The lead actress Yoon Eun Hye is a great actress. If you love her in this, (check out First Shop of Coffee Prince)another favorite of mine. Joo Ji Hoon does a fantastic job as the prince. This series was also called Goong & Princess Hours |
