Not Takaya's best work, but still moving and informative
This volume contains the origins of Tohru's family, a bit of student council fun, and then another incident with Akito. It starts with Kyo, who it turns out had met Tohru's mother when he was younger. He is remembering his conversation with her, where she relates her life story to him. As was mentioned in a previous volume, Kyoko Honda was a juvenile delinquent, hating her parents, skipping school, and getting into fights. But in this volume, we finally get to learn how she came to meet Tohru's father and settle down to have a family. We also learn how Tohru's father died and the effect that it had on her mother. Flash forward to the present. The student council is meeting outside of school for the first time. During this chapter, we get some insight on how Machi, an introverted member of the student council, sees the world, as well as a little more background information on her. After that, it is New Year's and all of the members of the Zodiac have come to visit Akito (except for Rin and Kyo, of course). Yuki decides to apologize to the head of the Sohma family and tells him that he no longer wants to make his problems anyone else's fault, to which Akito responds with smashing a vase over Yuki's head.
Overall, this was another enjoyable volume of Fruits Basket; full of comedy, tragedy, and mystery, and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!
