Ryan Scott - Sep 4 2005 ttjrscott@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! Hooray for giant monsters! If your enjoy the whole giant monsters attacking Japan with an underlying romance and a bit of comedy mixed in type of story than this is the anime for you. I really enjoyed the series and the voice actors are good if you prefer subtitles or if you want to watch it dubbed. Andrew Yager - Sep 20 2006 Rating: Wonderful! A show that deserves to be a classic, if it isn't one yet Everybody has their own idea of which series is a "classic" and which is merely "old." People can agree on several titles to fall under the classic category, but beyond a handful, it's all up in the air. This is one of those series that definitely deserves the status of a classic, even if it doesn't have it yet. Blue Seed revolves around a series of events begining (in the first episode) with a resurgance of an ancient "evil" known as the Aragami - a species of "demons" that look and behave surprisingly similar to plants as far as their biological functions go. It follows the exploits of the Terrestrial Administration Center (TAC), a government-sponsored organization designed to keep Japan safe from various other-worldly threats, a girl named Momiji (whose ancestor married the man/god who slew the 8-headed dragon Orochi, arguably an Aragami), and a boy named Kusanagi (whose body has been endowed with the powers of the Aragami through his posession of 7 mitama: an example of which is featured prominantly on the front of the box). While the animation is indeed old ('80s/'90s style), it's not BAD, and those of you who are familiar with Yuzo Takada (probably more famous for 3X3 Eyes) will recognize it instantly. Personally, I like the somewhat "dirty" look of the older animation styles, because they tend to be more detailed (things were done much more in pencil and ink rather than on computers back then), and the shading is far superior. The story, for its part, is top-notch. There are a few episodes where it seems to stutter a bit, and if you watch only the first two episodes, you might think the show's more of a hentai than anything else (tendrils and tentacles and such, but I assure you, no sex). However, overall the story is amazing: it incorporates a combination of Japanese myths and "real-world" modern-day savvy and technology - both things at which Takada has repeatedly shown himself to be extremely good. The sound... Well, the intro song has one of the most amusing "Engrish" lyrics I've ever heard (Pick Me Up Foxy Night Game???), but it's not bad. However, a lot of the music is quintessential American '80s. Do not - repeat - do NOT watch this show dubbed. Momiji's English voice actress is somehow even whinier than the Japanese (she has a wonderful voice, but Megumi Hayashibara can always play those whiney character to a T), and Kusanagi's voice actor sounds like he's got a perpetual cold (Jason Lee does a good job as Drake in R.O.D., but that's all I can say for him). Overall, the sound isn't the show's strong-point, but it doesn't hurt it, as long as you watch with the Japanese language track. I would say that this show belongs on just about any anime fan's shelf. It's got plenty of action - guns, giant monsters, magic, SCIENCE - plenty of humor (but not so much that it makes the show 'cheesey'), several romances that aren't as tired as they could be, and a story that should win awards if it hasn't already. For under $40, you're looking at one of the best bargains you'll ever find, even at MSRP (26 episodes, after all). |
