Good Film, but Not Very Shirow-esque :-(
Despite being conceived by Masamune Shirow, Gundress is very much the antithesis of Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, and other Shirow-derived anime in that it is highly upbeat. In fact, it is just too "happy" to fit in with other Shirow-derived anime. This "happiness" is evident in the fast-paced and almost-always optimistic narrative, the pervasive use of bright colors, and especially the music.

This does not mean that Gundress is a terrible film, however. Gundress is somewhat fun to watch, and will require several viewings to truly uncover everything - all the clues, all the visual details, the intertextual references, etc. It is also slightly reminiscent of the original Bubblegum Crisis series in several scenes in the first third of the film; a tertiary character is even reminiscent of Mikura's boss in Mezzo Forte.

On the (very) positive side, Gundress is compatible with the PlayStation2 :-)

Bubblegum Crisis Wannabe
Gundress is a one shot movie taken from a manga series and includes character designs by the legendary Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). The first thing I noticed was the animation. It was good for a movie made in the early 80's, unfortunately Gundress was made in 1999. I tried to put that aside since I highly recommend anime (actually from the 80's) with animation that's no better.

The show revolves around a group of hard suit wearing butt kicking chicks called Angel Arms (not Knight Sabers). The hard suits (which are relatively common and not just used by Angel Arms) do not seem to add any strength, speed, or protection to the wearer as normal hand guns still down these things consistently (esp. when worn by someone who isn't in Angel Arms or a principle bad guy) and people wearing them still lost hand-to-hand duels with principle characters who were not.

The main story is the internal struggle of main character Alisa (Priss) with her feelings for ex-boyfriend and main bad guy Jean Luc (for some reason they pronounced it "Jan Ruc" in the English Dub, but they managed to get Alisa right, go figure). The problem with her struggle - everyone else on Angel Arms assumes she is going through a tough time and may betray them, but with Alisa, it's never really a question. That just makes the whole thing awkward.

The action is plentiful and reminiscent of the best Stallone movie. In one scene, Alisa jumps into a slow moving cart that travels through a room filled with bad guys on both sides. As the cart crawls through the room, she picks off the highly trained anti-terrorist squad one by one while none of them can seem to figure out where the tortoise-like cart will be when their bullets reach the floor.

My favorite scene, though, was when the Sylia of the story (Takako) was out side the base (apparently waiting for Alisa to find a faster cart) in a helicopter. Two enemy fighters converge on her, one on each side. They both fire missiles (see where this is going?) and Takako simply gains altitude so the missiles pass right underneath her and into the fighters. Classic. Overall I rate Gundress as a pass. If you want to see hot babes in body armor kicking the crap out of bad guys, watch Bubblegum Crisis.

GOOD ACTION MOVIE
GOOD SHOW, BUT, IT WASN'T A SHIROW STYLE SHOW. THE SHOW CENTERED AROUND THE GIRLS CALL 'ANGEL ARMES', A PRIVATE SECURITY FORCE. THE FAVORITE WAS A GIRL THAT HAD A HISTORY. AND SHE WAS TRYING TO FLING THIS HISTORY AWAY.

ALL IN ALL, THE SHOW WAS GOOD ACTION. BUT, IF YOU LIKE TO SEE ASS KICKING GIRLS SEE 'BUBBLEGUM CRISIS'.
