Hand Maid May DVD 1 (Hyb): Maid to Order
brian - Jul 20 2001 b_scarberry@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! excellent I have seen all the TV episodes, not through DVD or VHS, but i have seen them. It is a great title worthy of watching over and over again. I for one, can't wait for the DVD to be released. David Tilley - Aug 18 2001 VegetaSuperBaby@aol.com Rating: Wonderful! Pioneer has struck gold again! Pioneer, the great company that brought us the Ranma OAV's and Many more titles, has done it again. From a paranoid rich psycho to a mechanical squid this movie has it all. In only four episodes this series has lept to the top of my list. The Dubious Lando (hatachi) - Aug 21 2001 Rating: Wonderful! MAYppai cute, MAYppai fun, MAYppai standard Pioneer fare I could sardonically label this Tenchi Muyou clone #2956, but for some reason this one proves a little more endearing than most. 'Hand Maid May,' a fan-favorite for a while now, is another (boing) cute, fun story (panchira) of the nice guy who gets all the girls (hello, target audience of 15 to 19 year-old-plus males), tied in together with the traditional tale of the robot (sorry, Saber Doll - er, CYBER Doll, forgive me, little Freudian slip there, heh) who wants to be more human. All the standard Pioneer animation fare is here. There's a character for every stereotype, and a girl for every fetish, if I may be so uncouth. First, there's the titular (now, now, I insist those of you thinking untoward thoughts consult Webster's here) May (Yamamoto Maria) with the USB tail, for your pocket-sized maid-fechi (wah, onaji JPS! just like me!), of course, who'll do her best, MAYppai; Kasumi (Takahashi Mikako), who looks like she just stepped out of Sentimental Graffiti, for those of you who like the kappatsu na sports tomboy; the obligatory Rena (Kugimiya Rie), for your healthful loli-loli life; Kei (Minami Omi), for those of you who like the sweet, glasses-wearing type; Mami, closer to the traditional Japanese maid archetype, who doesn't appear on this disc; and finally, Sara, played by Hikami Kyouko (Rabi en Rose from Di Gi Charat), the voluptuous pointy-eared customer service rep with a penchant for ramen, who plays foil (more or less) to Ueda Yuji (Rurouni Kenshin's Sanosuke) making an utter fool of himself as the show's "villain," er... what was his name again? Then there's your standard cutesy J-pop opening theme, for which the accompanying animation pretty much sums up the entire series quite accurately (and they really threw subtlety to the four winds, with the graphemes matching up with the phonemes only too literally, but gosh darn that May's so cute when she's gesticulating). Put all this together, and you've got Pioneer's standard recipe for fluff, served, thankfully, with the superb digital transfer for which they're so well known. I haven't bothered to check out the translation (except for that one part, where I was curious as to how Pioneer handled the name titling bit - so "-shi" is translated as "Monsieur," huh) or the dubbing yet, but I'm sure it's standard fare for Japanese animation released in the U.S., which is either a good or a bad thing for some. All in all, cute and fun with a bit of that infamous "fan service" too. Suffice it to say that if you think you might want this title, then you probably do. |
