A "Film Noir"-looking anime! Visual Melodrama... The -look- of this anime is quite unusual (for anime). It has "film noir" or a 1920's German impressionist look: Very dark, lots of angular shadow, etc. That, combined with just one other color in many shots, could be what prompted other reviewers to say it has a "western" look: Plenty of American comics (not cartoons, tho) have used that look. In some scenes there are lots of colors swimming in the background along with the darkness. I can imagine some people snickering about LSD "trips". So it looks -different-, but I don't imagine most people (myself included) would want to see a whole -bunch- of anime like this. It did show good signs of a gradually revealed story, with possible plot twists, etc., but didn't seem to be -emotionally- deep. Many of the characters are rather stereotypical, as well. Also the whole "mutant" aspect is far from original in fiction, anime or otherwise. Even the look of Kyosuke's "transformation" might recall similarly themed past anime, if you've seen some.
