Vampire Hunter D Novel 3 (300 pgs)
Seiu Ongaku - May 7 2006 Rating: Pretty good! Quite Different from the Movie The one thing I can say about this novel is that it's very different from the 2001 film. The characters have different attributes and attitudes, some have completely different skills than I remembered, and nearly every major showdown in the movie is different here. The Marcus clan is portrayed in a much darker light, there's no mention of Carmilla, and violence (physical or psychological) is more intense than in the previous novels. Despite the differences, I found this to be a fairly good read. We learn why the werewolf Mashira has a face on his chest, discover more about the history of the Aristocracy and D's left hand, and get exposed to a memorable but grisly death scene concerning Borgoff. We're also treated to a moderately different ending. In summary, people who want a play-by-play of the film will be disappointed. For everybody else it will provide a fresh telling of the tale and should prove rather enjoyable. |
