It isn't what you think . . .
. . . or maybe it's that this anime is better than you think it'll be. The premise and the first episode are simple enough: take one ordinary girl, add a bunch of protectors (all tongue-lollingly, tail-waggily handsome males, of course), a dash of unsuspected mystical power, and a pinch of some mysterious, forbidding evil, and voila! Instant shoujo anime.

But the art, right from the outset, is phenomenal, the story is never boring, and if you can guess any of the dramatic twists the plotline takes before they happen, I'll shake your hand and give you a cookie.

The artbox for this four DVD collection is beautiful. I love how it was illustrated and I'll never regret shelling out the minimal extra cash it took to acquire it. The DVD with the first four episodes is fantabulous. Again, the DVD box illustration is lovely and stylish, and the quality of the eps. is first rate. I enjoy the extras, and think the subtitling is well-done.

The plot of the opening episodes is light-hearted overall, though there is never a monster-of-the-week feeling to them even when Himeno and the Knights go off to fight. The parallel plot of Himeno adjusting to her new family, and they to her, is just as enjoyable as watching her learn to use her powers. And, I have to admit to enjoying the clever way the animators got Himeno into a new outfit almost every time she went into a fight. I looked forward to seeing what the next pret would produce by way of costume, and I admit to keeping count of the Knights. I have yet to settle on a favorite, though.

The Knights themselves are quite diverse, personality-wise and visually, and I like them for that. The three little ones are adorable, especially Mannen with his tough punk act, and I love the way the four older Knights are always looking out for them.

There are various sub-plots to be on the lookout for - you never know when one will become vital to the center of the show. I especially like following Mawata-chan, Himeno's younger step-sister. She's the most intriguing person of the anime, to me.

Most surprising is the sheer volume of content that the creators managed to cram into this 13 apisode anime. There is so much going on, yet it's easy to follow, clear-cut in its intentions, and loose ends are never left untied. A fully enjoyable show on all levels, I highly recommend PRETEAR to all people, be they shoujo fans or not.
