This is one of my fav anime series I picked this one up along with Baccano. I am currently watching the 2nd season, and I have to say both are brilliant! I hope Funimation decides to Dub the 2nd season as well. Ikki-Tousen Dragon Destiny DVD 1 (Hyb) peter w. pyle - Dec 20 2009 Rating: Wonderful! Less comedy, more action! I bought this volume @FYE. I'd seen the opening and closing animation on the 'net and they were, not too surprisingly, a tad bit risque. Loved the songs "Heart & Soul" and "Flower of Glass" that went with the opening and closing of each episode. The Omake (Extras), that were referred to as "OVA Episode 1&2", were quite amusing!! I'm looking forward to volume #2!! Case Closed Movie 3: The Last Wizard of the Century DVD (Hyb) J M. Albin - Dec 21 2009 Rating: Wonderful! Wonderful Movie - Poor quality DVD I received my pre-orded Detective Conan(Case Closed) movies The Last Wizard of the Century and Captured in Her Eyes this weekend. There is only one word available to describe my feelings for these: Disappointed! I was extremely happy with the quality of the subtitles in the first movie Skyscraper on a Timer, even the second movie 14th Target, while the use of black box to cover the on screen Japanese text was annoying, at least the information matched the dialog. For these last two movies: 1. the alternate angle option for the opening and closing credits was missing. 2. the black boxes used to introduce the characters contained American names not the Japanese 3. the place names appear in black boxes sometimes others appear top of screen in normal type. 4. missing the snapshot storyline, that plays during the ending credits. (Need to have disclaimer that movie was edited for broadcast like they do for television since it does not match the picture released to theaters.) I guess if you can tolerate the Americanization of the dialog and characters these movies have an interesting and mysterious storyline with excellent character development. I was hoping to replace my ancient fan-subbed copies with a more durable format as a companion to the R2 imported discs in my collection, but if this is the kind of quality that also appears in Countdown to Heaven and Phantom of Baker Street, I'm afraid all will end up being donated to the local library. They don't usually care if the sub-titled track is accurate. Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1 DVD Collection (D) Devon Murray - Dec 21 2009 Rating: Wonderful! An epic adventure series full of wit and exceptional action sequences. Okay…technically not anime by most definitions, but does it really matter when a series is this superb? There are a lot of great characters in this show, each with distinct personalities and histories. The action is very unique and memorable. The special ability system (Bending) is well thought out, cleverly applied and tied in to specific forms of martial arts. It is apparent that a great deal of thought went into this series. The result is a show where the different elements mesh together in ways that are clever and elegant. There’s plenty of humor in Avatar, but it is always secondary to the plot (which is great) and seems less forced than in most other American-produced animated shows. Even the character Sokka, who is the main comedic relief, is an integral part of the plot and has plenty of depth. They chose a good length for this series. It doesn’t drag on forever with sub-standard filler episodes until the impact of the main storyline is lost (cough…Naruto…cough), not does it try to shoehorn everything into a dozen episodes at the expense of depth. Sixty-one episodes and not one of them is a filler episode. Many shonen anime nowadays should aspire to this level of quality. Although this series is safe to show to younger children, you’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you brush it off as being just a kiddie show. It is a magnificent piece of work and deserved the accolades it received. Clannad DVD Collection 1 (S) Devon Murray - Dec 21 2009 Rating: Wonderful! An absolute must-have. Possibly the best anime series you will ever watch. Another gorgeous work by Kyoto Animation with beautiful animation and audio. They did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. I thoroughly enjoyed the first season, which is full of genuinely funny moments but retains an undertone of seriousness. In the second season (After Story) the characters are a little older and dealing with more serious, adult problems. Though still full of funny moments, the story is, at times, extremely heart-wrenching. This is part of the reason for its greatness. Though this anime has its roots in a visual novel, they don’t let it into degenerate into a harem anime. Not knowing Japanese, I generally avoid shows that aren’t dubbed. However, there are a handful of titles (ARIA for instance) whose essence I believe cannot be faithfully captured by a dub, no matter how good. Clannad is one of these. I’ve seen 5000+ episodes of anime and I think that After Story Episode #18 ‘The Ends of the Earth’ may be the single greatest episode of anime ever made. The impact of this series will stay with you for a long time…and as with all things profound and great, it should. |
