Noir was great, but...
An anime series that has this much of a serious, dramatic feel is few and far between. NOIR isnt your run-of-the-mill anime series with robots, goofy guys and girls, and over the top facial expressions. These gals mean business, and their business is killing. But now the hunters are the hunted, and so the story goes... Here are my problems with an otherwise great anime series: #1) Too many flasback scenes. We don't need to be reminded of what happened last episode, every episode. #2) Any anime with this much shooting and killing should have more blood. People are getting stabbed and shot to high hell, and there's no blood at all on the bodies or on the ground/floors. #3) Cutting the kill scenes. They'll show a kill scene AFTER the victim has already been stabbed and waiting to fall. CAN WE PLEASE SEE THE ACTUAL ACT? Even with those flaws, NOIR is still a standout series amidst a slew of mediocre action titles. Rich storytelling, lush animation, and more than decent music make NOIR a must see! 8.5 out of 10!

good but problems to be worked out
noir is good for people who dont really feel like watching demons and magic but guns. I watched it on my xbox but there were a few parts in it were the animation looked grainy and kind of scratchy. it was cool and had a very serious tone, look for comedy elsewhere, one other gripe i have is that when someone dies theres no blood and sometimes they dont actually show them getting shot. oh yeah flashbacks are abundant in this first dvd some times youll fell like your watching an episode twice with a few new things. pick it up though if you have some extra cash.

Very Dark and secretive, but great!!
I believe that anime has completely capture the essence of "film noir" or "black film." If your not the one to watch dark stories of betrayal and deciet, then this is not for you. However, you might get a kick out of this show. It's not into mecha or girls showing off thier skin, but a dive into the mind and thought. I thought it was great.

it rocks
Right, Noir is different from most series and each DVD just get better. I have seen the whole series and the ending of the series is just out of this world. I would have to say that Noir rocks.

sin amongst sin
Noir, it wasn?t all that great for me. Yes I know the animation is great and the action is good too. Also, I don?t mind Noir being dark. What I didn?t like about noir are people trying to play God. Sin amongst Sin and two women who reign over death, which is crap. Noir is two women judging, killing, and reign over death. What the hell is that? Noir isn?t just dark, and it is also dysfunctional. The series starts out ok, but when you get to the end of the series, the series shows that Noir is some kind of a cult. This cult as its own followers, own church, and on top of all that-you can get your own Noir bible. Yes I would have to say Noir is a little too much for me.

Strange to find a story this dark in such a colorful show
This is not your standard anime - there is no comedy, there is no mecha and there are no samurai. There is tons of killing however. I do not want to spoil anything but just for anyone thinking about this title, let me tell you that a show with a teenager who is a more adept killer than Golgo 13 is worth watching. That last statement was not an exaggeration. As for the flashbacks mentioned above, they are numerous in the episodes, but it adds to the feel of the show. The characters have to go backwards in order to make progress so flashbacks make perfect sense.

A Series That Breaks the Rules
This is not your average anime series. Noir focuses on the intricate relationship of four people. The series focusses on two in the beginning: Kirika Yuumura and Mireille Bouquet. You learn at the start that their lives are somehow connected as evidenced by a pocket watch with a haunting music box melody (I wonder if they'll sell a real one. I rather like the tune).

Noir takes advantage of the fact that the characters know about as much as you do. Kirika's amnesia and Mireille's repressed memories allow the viewer to make discoveries about the past as the characters do. A unique and fun way of interacting with the story.

The characters are interesting in and of themselves. Mireille is a professional assassin, trained by her uncle after their exile from Corsica. Kirika is an amnesiac with knowledge about the underworld and an uncanny ability with a Baretta M1939, but not much else. In their working together, Mireille is often disturbed by Kirika's lack of emotion.

Many have complained about the many flashbacks involved in the series. As I pointed out earlier, this is a series about self discovery and the viewer is as much involved as the characters. The series would not make much sense with out the flashback, especially since they become more and more defined as time moves forward. Then, there is the fact that all of the killings involved are bloodless. Quite frankly, Anime is repleat enough with large sprays and splash of blood (the Japanese seem to think that the human body contains more blood than it actually does. I know, I know. It's for effect). In fact, Mireille prefers her killings nice and neat. She calls Kirika's hand-to-hand combat "garish," and considers murder by blade "vulgar."

This series is a true treat, for those who love a good whodunit. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a break from the likes of Dragonball or Chobits (no poor reflection on them, but they follow a specific mold. Noir is one of a kind).
