Finding himself in dire straights (yet again), Godai is forced to scramble for a job after being summarily laid-off from his teaching-gig. Thanks to a recommendation from a friend, he embarks on a brilliant new career in public relations - at a strip club. In addition, Godai quickly finds himself in the role of de facto daddy when one of the hostesses absconds without her children.

As if becoming a part-time babysitter at a strip club wasn't bad enough, struggling student Godai up and moves in there - basically because it's the only place where he can study in peace. Compared to the drunken din of Maison Ikkoku, bunking at the strip club feels like a retreat to the local monastery.

"The woman I love burns with jealousy, leaps to conclusions, cries, and turns to ice, but when she laughs, the world is mine." Such are Yusaku Godai's feelings for Kyoko Otonashi. Over the years, his love for Kyoko has grown, and nothing fate threw in his way could keep him from pursuing Kyoko's affections. Will she finally reciprocate or has he simply wasted his life pining for a woman beyond his reach?

Kyoko must fight for her independence as her meddling, overprotective parents use every scheme imaginable to get her to give up her beloved job and move back home. Bumbling Yusaku meets the overly solicitous family of Kozue, whom he's reluctantly dating, and then ends up on one of those never-ending visits to his own doting folks.

Yusaku's New Year's fortune comes true, but he quickly learns he should be careful what he wishes for. When Valentine's Day arrives, Yusaku receives flowers from Kozue and then soon after from Kyoko - each with its own meaning. Kyoko's parents continue to meddle in her life, despite her protests.

Finally, Mr. Ichinose makes an appearance in the series. A shouting match over a sweater from Kozue sends Kyoko - and Yusaku - over the edge. Yusaku ends up in the hospital and has two unexpected visitors. His cute cousin comes to nurse him and Kyoko's other suitor, Mitaka, ends up being his roommate. Yusaku's problems aren't over when he's discharged – he has to deal with Kyoko and his school absences.

Yusaku finally gets serious about finding a job. Unfortunately, Kyoko is the only one who takes him seriously. He gets a position waiting tables at a resort, and an eyeful when Kyoko loses her top in the pool. Once he finally lands a gig student-teaching at Kyoko's old high school, a googly-eyed student named Yagami moves into his life, and, sneakily, into Maison Ikkoku.
