THE MASTER OF ALL ANIME!!!!
Metropolis is not my favorite anime but is a real 5 STAR ANIME since Battle Angel and Key the Metal Idol (My favorite animes). I said "is the master of all anime" because it have a TREMENDOUS animation, COOL graphics, an AMAZING story and storyline(much better than AKIRA),SCI-FI action with sad drama and a SPECTACULAR voice acting(I really recommend this japanese's voice acting to people that is starting to hear the anime in japanese). I do not recommend Metropolis to people that are searching for blood and HI-Action in anime... so..meaby Metropolis is SUPERB but not PERFECT. I heard the three languages are they were very well made. The english track was very good but it could be much better, The french and japanese tracks vere the ones that ROCK'S(I really like the voice of Tima in french). Now....WHO IM TRYING TO FOOL??!! Metropolis is wating for you!!! JUST BUY IT AND DON'T RENT IT!!!!!! Now I won't talk anymore about this masterpiece! P.S: STEVEN SPIELBERG! eat your heart out!

A Beautiful Tribute To Classic Sci-Fi
This is arguably the best anime ever made. Beginning with the plot from Fritz Lang's original silent film, Osamu Tezuka and crew added elements from Jules Verne and Asimov, creating a new cyborg/human world that has only been seen in Blade Runner, A.I., and The Terminator. But considering that this film is animated, the producers had to use an artistic gimmick to appeal to a mass audience; and I believe it worked. The animation is combined from cell, 3-D, and roto, and looks almost as if the backgrounds were digitized from Lang's original prints. The main characters are also mirrored from the original, but now have more depth and are classically rendered as if Disney, Fleischer, or Bakshi may have drawn them. The city settings also have a Deco pastel look, peppered by jazz music, and adding to the Neo-1930's tone. It also feels like film noir during the most dramatic moments. Some movie critics say the techniques used detracts from the film, but I disagree. I wouldn't say it's "futuristic" by a long shot, but more of a future fantasy; like a really good RPG movie. The region 1 DVD is sold with a special feature "pocket DVD"(3-incher); another useless gimmick to sell the film. If you haven't seen it or bought it yet, you are missing a real treat; especially if you love classic sci-fi.

Strange but good
I enjoyed Metropolis even though the sad ending was invetiable. At first I was skeptical but as the movie progressed I was drawn in by the story and music. I recommend this for any anime collector. Even though I rented it , I plan on buying Metropolis in the near future....Well at least until i can find a summer job. Anyway if you don't buy it, rent it. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

i cried when i watched the film. not because i was good, but because it sucked
Let me start off by saying osama tezuka is a genious, and this movie would have made that genious sick. It is a good movie to put on when you're tired and need some sleep. I was so excited when i bought this movie and even more excited when i turned it on.it had beautiful animation that lived up to osama tezuka. Then came the story, or rather lack of. It was so boring, and was host to a climatic ending that wasn't climatic at all. i say skip this film and save yourself from the emotional scars of boredom. no.....infact i plea to you.....SKIP THIS FILM

Z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z!
I watched this movie because I heard all the hype about it being so well done. Frankly, it blows! The first hour is pure torture as you wait with baited breath for something exciting to happen, it never does! The last 20 minutes are pretty cool, but it seems like they were just trying to figure out how to end the movie quick after it dragged on for so long.

My advice? Watch something else....

Great visuals -- but the pace kills the central plot.
Metropolis is one of those recent anime features that had a VERY big push in the US by a major distributor. I'm guessing it probably DIDN'T sell very well in the end but I wouldn't discourage anyone from at least renting the film.

There's no doubt Metropolis is a great-looking film. I LOVE retro-character designs with today's better animation techniques (as opposed to 1960s anime) and lush coloring. The current retro-trend in anime character designs is very welcome and works surprisingly well within the recent Kikaider, Cyborg 009, and new Astro Boy TV series. It's also VERY surprising that the CGI in this film complements the 2-D hand-drawn elements very well and doesn't pop up a lot. A big problem with many recent anime is the unfortunate tendency for CGI imagery to distract from the rest of the film and RUIN the look of the film. This does NOT appear to be an issue with most of Metropolis.

The music in Metropolis is also very... DIFFERENT. Can't say that I love it or hate it, it's just DIFFERENT.

Oh boy, and here's where we get to the bad part.

Metropolis doesn't have much of a story. Sure, it's based on the 1920s classic German science fiction silent, BUT the film really drags and doesn't seem to pick up pace. Without giving too much of the plot away, it re-examines the age-old questions of can machines have life, and is it possible for there to be emotional love between man and machine?

I guess the relationship between the two leads builds to a point, but I'm not so sure that it resolved as well as it could have and that the final moments in the film paid off as well as they could have.

Tezuka, the author of the manga the film was adapted from, tackled this question successfully around 40 years ago in the first Astro Boy TV series and its 1950s manga predecessor. I am not convinced, that in spite of their best efforts and care, that Rin Taro and his production staff were able to do the same in Metropolis the anime.

If someone put a gun to my head and made me choose between this film and say, Spriggan, there's no question Metropolis would come out on top.

My best recommendation to everybody out there -- RENT this film first and make up your mind. If you're somebody who's totally into visuals and can forgive the slow pace of this film and a story that goes nowhere fast, then it's a no-brainer for you -- buy the film. Everybody else -- it's cheaper to rent the film from Blockbusters or borrow a friend's copy to help make up your own mind.

Tezuka's Latest Masterpiece
When I first saw this movie movie on the Action Channel, I know it was created by the late Osamu Tezuka, famous for Astro Boy, Black Jack, and others. I was really a great movie. I decided to buy it on my 20th Birthday and I did. I was about a Detective and his nephew who found a Robot named Tima. Also there was one person who hates robots, Rock was his name. He destroyes robot with his gun. Duke Red took Rock in as his son. There was one good guy who met up with Kenichi and Tima. Atlas was his name. Leader of a group of Revolutionaries. The movie features the talents of: Jamieson Price, Steven Blum ,Dave Mallow,Tony Pope,Scott Weinger,Rebecca Forstadt , and Brianne Siddall, famous for .hack//sign. Also a song by Ray Charles called "I can't stop loving you". This movie is in memory of Osamu Tezuka, Tony Pope, and Ray Charles. They were great men. I will remember them. In closing, add this anime to your collection. You will see what I mean.

Excellent!
This is a milestone in anime history. I think Osama Tezuka would be proud. Director Rintaro and Katsuhiro Otomo did very well. I think everyone should see this film. I highly reccomend this title.
