Tenchi Muyo: Movie 2 DVD (Hyb): Daughter of Darkness
Jeff Wesolowski - Jun 25 1998 jwesolowski@juno.com Rating: Not all that good. Unless a die-hard Tenchi fan, don't even bother If it wasn't for the fact that Tenchi Muyo Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness is as bright, colorful and well-done (technically) as its predecessor, it would be almost unwatchable. While the first movie may have borrowed too much from the Back to the Future storyline, it at least salvaged itself by having the Tenchi cast interact well, in a humorous, light-heartedly dramatic fashion. The Tenchi cast itself is enough to entertain, and the little bit of mystery that Tenchi Muyo in Love provided was more than enough to sustain the average anime fan for its 90 minutes. Tenchi 2, however, removes all subtlety in humor and storytelling, and instead offers many lame, forced comedic situations and an appalingly predictable outcome. Even at an hours length, it seems overlong. After around ten minutes, once the mind-numbingly annoying "Daughter of Darkness" enters the picture, the "film" becomes a chore. It is on DVD, though, which helps. And the fact that Japanese subtitles are available makes this film bearable, but, otherwise, I'd warn all before investing in Tenchi Muyo 2. Daniel - Sep 1 1998 Diogy1@hotmail.com Rating: Pretty good! pretty good No where close to as good as the first movie. The second lacked action and a purpose. the animation is great and the color is awsome but it's only a one or two time watcher. I like tanchi that's why I bought it. If your not a tenchi fan don't by it rent it. Scott O'Bryan - Oct 28 1998 darkarena@idcomm.com Rating: Pretty good! Yet another good Tenchi Movie Although not as good as the first Tenchi Muyo movie, this Movie definatly does not live down what is, in my opinion, Pioneer's flagship anime. It contain romance, comedy, adventure, danger, and yet another woman from somewhere not of this earth. The only reason this movie wasn't quite as entertaining as it's predicessor is that it is pretty much "vintage Tenchi" which after so many OVA's and the first three Tenchi-Universe collections can become a bit tiring. Nonetheless, it is a must see for any Tenchi enthusiast. Bageria - Dec 10 1998 bageria1@hotmail.com Rating: "Okay." In the tradition of Tenchi This movie as all have said isn't the greatest Tenchi ever made yet it did contain the essnstial values of the tenchi legacy. It did not comply with the rest of the shows. This little girl is confused and abandoned thinking that Tenchi is her father. (which in a small way is true) Just another plot for some silly bad guy to get revenge on Tenchi when he still has no idea what is going on. Having it on VHS I would not bother to buy it on DVD it is definatly not worth the price. But If you are a tenchi lover as I am you must see it for the simple fact that it is Tenchi. Lou Pine - Nov 15 2000 Loupine@aol.com Rating: Pretty good! I liked it Well I personally thought it was pretty good. It wasn't as good as the first one but it is enjoyable. It was well done and funny at times, also not overly dramatic. I would say most people would probably enjoy this movie. So i say go watch it. Finally six minutes into the movie a confused little purple-haired gril shows up calling Tenchi Daddy. I love Mayuka's background music, but this whole scene went to fast. I think that they should have spent time on character development. Mayuka could've made her appearance fifteen-twenty minutes in. The whole movie was rushed. It could've been bumped up into a hour and thirty or so. I will give credit to it though. It was more colorful than the other Tenchi movies. Also, each character had a almost equel part (excluding Noboyoki) Everyone actually did something to add plot to the movie. Ryoko (and Aeyka, just a littlt)had a bigger part than most of the girls. This movie was O.K. The extra features also add to it. It's worth your money. Yukarifan - Jul 23 2001 yukarifan@earthlink.net Rating: Pretty good! Good, but room for improvement Although it did have a rather interesting premise,a mysterious girl shows up at the Masaki shrine claiming to be Tenchi's daughter, this movie has several major shortcomings.Among them was character development (particularly Maeka/Mayuka).Her reactions to things like not being able to remember anything about her life sounded more like Mihoshi's rather goofy responses (as opposed to Sakuya from Shin Tenchi Muyo who was much more believable). They could have added a larger role for the other characters as well. The plotline could have added a bit more depth in areas like Yuzuha and Yosho's relationship as well. Also, chaning the name from Manatsu no Ibu(Midsummer's Eve) to "Daughter of Darkness" was a bad idea(making it sound more like a B-rated horror movie).Still;it is a good addition to the Tenchi series. john r. green - Apr 29 2002 Rating: Wonderful! very good overall, excellent music, excellent stioryline. the thing that grabbed my attention was the soundtrack. the storyline was engrossing. the animation was very good. all in all it wa exceptional. Kenshin Himura - Jun 22 2002 wingzero1234@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! AWESOME this movie is awesome just like the first! Nerdy Dragon - Dec 27 2002 Rating: Wonderful! I STILL LIKE IT!!! Like other reviewers I didn't think this was as good as the first Tenchi movie, but I don't think it's one to just toss out in cold either!!! The beginning is rather confusing, and they could have elaborated more at the end and Mayuka saying "Daddy" all the time did get on my nerves, but there was a lot of good stuff in this movie too!! Like that shocking scene between Tenchi and Ryoko!!! Despite a few complaints I still thought this was another GREAT Tenchi movie. Paul Garvin - Dec 20 2004 Rating: Wonderful! Very good feature. Unlike a lot of the others here, I think this is the best of the 3 TM movies. The soundtrack is exceptional, combining choral, classical and a few other styles. I thought Miyuka was cute, the ending is kinda unexpected. The animation was very good, for the most part. It's of a different genre than the other 2 TM movies. Even if you had never seen anything TM, you could still make pretty good sense out of the story. Although of the TM universe it's basically a stand alone story. It held a sort of wonderment for me the 1st time I viewed it. Anyway-highly recommended. |
