Sailor Moon Season 1: Uncut DVD (S)
Tracey S. Keiser - Apr 23 2003 tskeiser@yahoo.com Rating: This sucked! Total ripoff and waste of true Sailor Moon fans time. Now don't get me wrong, if it wasn't for this series, I would have never gotten into anime. Personally, I love the series, but I contacted ADV films and they said that the reason that they couldn't get it sub/dubbed was because of trying to find the original voice actors. Anything less on DVD technology today than sub/dub is a waste of money and an insult to your intelligence. Charles E. Kusiak - Apr 27 2003 akarenjaa@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! At long last, the series cometh....complete and uncut Sailor Moon fans have waited a long time for this day to come, when the first season will be made available with all 46 episodes intact, uncut and unaltered without the annoying English vocal tracks. Though it was a year late if ADV's intentions was to have it ready for release to coincide with Sailor Moon's 10th Anniversary. And hopefully, the discs will have a wealth of extras that were absent from the Toei Video releases. AJ Chang - May 12 2003 KakeruTsukiJ90@hotmail.com Rating: Pretty good! Read this, and see why its not "Wonderful" OK, so the first time I hear this is being released, I freaked out. The whole day, I looked like I'd gotten in a whole bag of sugar. OK, so don't get me wrong, I LOVE this. The only thing that threw me off was bassically the lack of Craftsmanship. Jeez ADV. OK, so first off, they didn't use the original japanese drawings on the box. I've seen the box itself, and they did a pretty good job, actually wonderful. Except, like true Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon fans, we'd hope that they'd atleast use the original japanese images. THEY DIDNT! T_T<WHAT?! twitch. OK, but I don't really care that much. Also, they didn't even use japanese drawings. They used the CHEESY poorly constructed american artwork. Grrr! OVERALL, i HOPE THEY DID A GOOD JOB. But the rating. 15up? Um, I'm confused. Does anyone know why? Is the 1st season worse than the others, content wise? OK, bye. AJ Dana Dimitriu - May 15 2003 dadidimitriu@iasi.mednet.ro Rating: Wonderful! THERE IS A GOD!!!! Are you a Sailor Moon fan, or not yet?For those who are: did this show fulfilled your reality too? What we have here is a living beeing,I mean living by herself, have you noticed this? THERE IS A GOD because: the audio in English RUINS the moovie. I have seen many reviews that said Sailor Moon it's an awful show, not being credible because it mixes different believings and religious habits.OK, I agree that if you watch this movie superficial, and not follow all the clues that make the plot and the storyline worthwhile, Sailor Moon may seem a goofy show. But I was not able to understand the fury of those reviews until I listened a little bit of an episode - I just simply can't bare doing that for a longer time - in English Audio! It destroyed ALL OF IT! IT'S HIDEOUS AND GROTESQUE!!!I sincerely believe that all the critics come for this particulare reason!!! So, if you want to see this movie and be happy - not nervous- you DEFINITLY have to listen it in Japanese, and, if you don't know the language, it's obvious that you do nees english subtitles! By the way, I think that english subtitles are wonderful for learn both english and japanese very easily and with much pleasure. THERE IS A GOD also because every fan wants UNCUT version and MANY EPISODES ( not just 1-4, 1-10, etc!) So, if you are not yet a Sailor Moon fan, and you are in search for something that could change your life, BUY THIS PARTICULAR DVD!!! Angelique Pacheco - May 28 2003 fmpacheo@earthlink.net Rating: This sucked! Anime I never seen the new dvd but to me I'm sure it really sucks because it is not in english like who would watch a show that only speaks in japanese with english subtitles. A lot of people don't like that. Who ever said that is better off like that is really stupid because all you really doing is listening to some other language reading the subtitles that they are not really watching the show. The way the people should make the dvd is to have it in dubbed version with all episodes uncut and they can have it in japanese with subtitles to but leave the dam dvd in english. The other anime are almost the same thing but they need to leave it in english. Even the manga books. Life really sucks I mean that we have to go to school and all but doing this to the anime and manga that is stupid. I wish they would put it how me, my friends and other people want. Gina M. Biggs - Jun 9 2003 Rating: Wonderful! It's about time this happened! Finally all the cultural, religious, and linguistic aspects of the show are going to be available to the everyday buyer. I've seen the episodes uncut/in japanese a million times, but its about time that I can get it on a nice quality DVD. The dubbed version of this show was an adaptation which ripped out all the meaningful aspects of the show. Friendship, love, hate, life, death, reincarnation, transcendence, etc. It's all going to be here now! Way ta go, ADV! Rashima Kerenmosa - Jun 13 2003 rashima@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! Wow, Some ppl just don't get it. Wow. It seems some ppl just don't understand the exact reason that ADV doesn't have a dub track on this. The reason is simple. These are UNCUT. The dubs are cut to shreds. Even entire episodes are left out I believe. So to make a dub version, ADV would have to either get all the voice actors back or to record a whole different voice actor cast for the entire series. So IMHO, relax and enjoy the series as it was meant to be seen, rather than Americanized for our "protection". unknown a. unknown - Jun 16 2003 Rating: Wonderful! At Last. Ok I just want to say. Thank you ADV. At last we get to see Sailor Moon The way it was to be. i mean come on. what would you rather see. the dumb english verson or the japan verson with better script?. can't wait for the dvd uncut to come. Ansel G. Ford - Jul 19 2003 Parallax281457689@Yahoo.com Rating: Wonderful! S-s-s-smokin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's about time the first season was shown uncut! What were the sponsors, the FCC, and DiC(k) smoking when they dubbed this masterpiece and turned it into crap?!!! Screw the English dubbed crap and go for SAilor Moon uncut! You'll LOVE it!!! David H. Olsen - Jul 20 2003 dholsen@hotmail.com Rating: Pretty good! Great Disc! Only one problem This is it folks--- Sailor Moon Uncut. Long and awaited--- a wonderful show finally gets to us in its original form. There is only ONE problem-- the audio on these discs isn't very good. Some episodes come out pretty clearly, while others sound worse than if you were to watch these episodes and 3rd generation rip-offs from TV-- the sound gets all bassy and difficult to hear enunciation in the words--- and it's not THAT OLD. 1992---- should of been able to get a better Audio fix-- Urusei Yatsura on DVD sounds better than this-- and it's older. But nonetheless-- this is still a wonderful release ^_^ Charles E. Kusiak - Jul 23 2003 akarenjaa@hotmail.com Rating: "Okay." Review Update Having finally seen the final product, I was sort of disappointed with the quality of the prints that ADV had to work with. The prints themselves appeared to be ten years old with unretouched audio (You'd have to turn the volume way up on your TV). I thought the quality of the discs distributed by Toei Video were better. Also, there is a lack in extras. I expected to see interviews with series creator Naoko Takeuchi, Japanese fan art, forum with series voice actors/actresses, Sailor Moon stage shows, and such. It was disappointing that none of that was afeature. Aside from that, the subtitling wasn't too bad, much of the original material was intact, and the packaging, while not necessarily being on par with Toei's, isn't too shabby. I hope they come out with a "Remastered" version in three year's time. Mushijashoki Youshimoazto - Aug 4 2003 matthewwe15@lycos.com Rating: Wonderful! It was great It was get! When I watched the uncut episodes, I saw alot of stuff that I didn't see on the DiC episodes! I hope ADV will bring the other 4 seasons to America! The only thing I didn't like is..... it was in its Original Japanese language!!!! Anyways it was great Mujiasuzamola Y. Yousicamishi - Aug 4 2003 matthewwe15@lycos.com Rating: Wonderful! It was great!!!! It was great, when i saw the episodes I noticed that the episodes were different from the American episodes! Also I noticed that 'DiC' cut alot of stuff out some i like what ADV did, bring the original episodes. It was great. Also I did'nt like it being subtitaled!!! Also from the American episodes they cut the 'body lines' when the transform. Also the cut the words 'Make-Up' when they (Sailor Senshi) transform too. Also the cut scenes when (girl) being slapped. So on the uncut verison they (ADV) lift the scenes, bodylines, keeping the original form. :) Dea Grey - Aug 12 2003 Rating: Wonderful! Statement above says it all. :D Nathan C. Flood - Aug 18 2003 Duco7@aol.com Rating: Not all that good. If they decided to take this much time, why didn't they get it right?! All right, I'm not hating on Sailor Moon. I love the series and the opportunity to finally own it uncut on DVD is great! But what is with the audio?! Did they just decide to make it sound terrible? You can barely hear the music and the dialogue is muffled at best. This is not just my copy, I have other confirmations of this occurrence. I didn't pay 100+ dollars for audio that's worse than the english dub. I hate to say it, but I'm an unsatisfied customer. Nicholas B. Lentini - Oct 14 2003 Rating: Not all that good. Poor job done by ADV I was so excited to see Sailor Moon season 1 uncut on DVD, i jumped to buy it as soon as i saw it. However, ADV did a very poor job on the transferring the show. The Opening, Intro and Closing are horribly muffled. Also, the footage itself looks like VHS quality. There is also a brief part on disc 5 (the first ep on the disc) where the picture lags for a few minutes (i thought i just had a defect and returned it for another, only to find the same problem in the same place( I tried ot on 3 diffrent DVD players, same result everytime). ADV was looking like they were starting to actaully care about quality rather than just getting the title over here (They did a good job on the "Dirty Pair" series), but my confidence in them is more than a little shaken in light of these events. Shame on you ADV. The only reason I don't say "This Sucked" is becuase it is still my second favorite season of Sailor Moon. Final Cataclsym - Apr 21 2004 Rating: Wonderful! I wouldn't change a thing. Part of being an American anime fan is getting screwed out of the "good stuff." If anyone is dissatisfied with no Japanese artwork, poor sound quality, or poor choice of extras, get used to it. I was content enough to hear it in Japanese and see all the original episodes. If I wanted extras I would have bought a poster or two. If people are upset because of ADV slacking off on extras, blame them but not the series. Being a true anime fan is understanding that sometimes, you're just gonna get screwed out of something. The series came out when I was six. Three times my age at 18 I enjoy it a lot more. The themes of sacrifice and love are much more prevelent in the series in original Japanese. If you can't stand the language, don't buy it simply put. Mike Smith - May 9 2004 bulldogcountry00@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! REAL Sailor Moon! A complete uncut season of Sailor Moon! Let me just say that the certain US company that brought it to air here in the United States made it look like a kids show. This is far from it. Lindsey Switzer - Jun 11 2004 Rating: Pretty good! Overall, pretty good ^_^ My only complaint about this is that the vocal tracks seemed to fluctuate quite often in volume. Now, I live in a dorm, so I don't want to bother my neighbors, so I spent a good deal of time turning the volume up and down. That got kind of bothersome after a while. Otherwise, I was quite happy. Sailor Moon was my first anime, way back in fifth grade, back before I'd even heard the word or knew what anime was. And it's a treat for me to see it again. It's wonderful to have the real intent preserved. For example, dubs (for whatever reason) tend to shy away from the issue of death, whereas this simply accepts it as a part of the battle. And it was only now that I realized how truly badly cut up the dub was. Will the dubbers never learn? We don't want editted, we want the real deal! Furthermore, I'm a big advocate of the originals. There are very few dubs that I watch (actually, Fruits Basket and Excel Saga are the only two that come to mind...). I prefer the subtitled versions. To the person a few reviews up who was knocking subtitles--you're welcome to watch dubs if you want. But once you get used to reading subtitles, in no way does it detract from your viewing experience. In some ways, it can actually help, because you have to be paying attention, or you might miss something. In short, if you are a Sailor Moon fan and want to see it in original, uncut goodiness, I'd recommend this. I'm very glad to finally own it (at a relatively reasonable price, no less!) Nicholas J. Cervenka - Jun 28 2004 dragons_revenge@hotmail.com Rating: "Okay." The only good thing about it is that I have it It says a lot when my fansubbed VHS tapes are better quality then DVDs released by a major company. It's a good thing I paid 50 bucks for it, otherwise I would've felt ripped off. There's nothing by way of DVD features either, just ADV previews. The packaging isnt too shabby, I like that slip case, and the episode guides are good for laying things out for the n00bs. Otherwise there's absolutely nothing here that would've justified the 150 dollar price tag. Those of you who were unfortunate enough to pay that... heh sucks to be you. At least now I got all the series uncut, so that just about makes up for it. Tony Carson - Jul 12 2004 Rating: "Okay." Content: good. Presentation: not so good. I was never a big Sailor Moon fan. In fact, I only caught a few episodes when it was butchered and dubbed and played on kids' afternoon TV. But I knew there was something good behind that version. Enter the low priced complete Seasons 1 and 2 of Sailor Moon. I would not have paid 150 bucks for these sets, but 50 bucks, considering the sheer amount of content on them, is quite reasonable. The shows themselves, so far, are quite enjoyable. Somewhat simplistic plotlines so far, but I'm only on disk 1. Like Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon spends a lot of time on the characters personalities and the relationships between them. And the characters do, in general have personality. Packaging is superb. Each season is in two 4-disk keepcases, with episode guides and a nice shelf art box. The program's presentation, sadly, is disappointing. The video is not real crisp and is sometimes jittery [although, admittedly, I'm looking for it, and I'm using a 60-inch tv]. The audio is very 'canned' and sounds like a personal video camera [It does sound better when you run it through a home theater receiver and play it on Dolby Pro Logic, rather than relying on the Dolby 'surround']. To me, that's not a big deal--I don't know Japanese anyway. I'd rate this midway between Pretty good and Okay. If you can deal with a slight feeling of 'quantity over quality', and you like the magical-girl genre or Sailor Moon, this is worth the 50 bucks. [Compare: the average Hollywood movie DVD release is 15$-20$, and has between 1.5 and, say, 5 hours of content + extras, some of which you might not be interested in. 50$ for 16+ hours is quite a bargain, especially considering it's a complete series of a classic, influential anime on DVD.] If everything you get has to be demo-quality, *stay far away* from this release. Caroline J. Klawender - Jul 14 2004 Rating: Pretty good! Beatiful story of love, friendship, and good .vs. evil I was very happy when I bought my own copy of the 1st Season of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon uncut. The translations seemed pretty good for the most part, but the one thing that myself and many others are upset about is the audio. Why did ADV Films have to make this mistake? It's really nobody else's fault but thier own! I didn't paying $100 some dollars to have crappy sound quality! Even(Geneon)-Pioneer's releases of the 3rd and 4th seasons have a better sound quality than this! Also, why move the episode teasers from before the opening song to after that? Now THAT really makes no sense!! Oh well. At least the translations are pretty accuarate, although in making it 15UP you'd think that the swearing would be correctly translated!!! ^_^; (Let's just say "kuso" <translated as "damn it"> means a word being with S and ends with a t...) It's a shame that the R box set didn't have Episode 67, but that was just business as usual for Toei, it seems... I hope one day, all the Sailor Moon seasons will be able to be re-released in the U.S. with the proper treatment (good audio and image qualilty, extras, Next Week episode previews, etc...) that a great series like this deserves. Buyer beware of the audio quality, but don't let that stop you from owning this wonderful series that let many people to love anime! ^_^ Sarah R. Hughes - Jul 15 2004 SailorAstera@aol.com Rating: Wonderful! Oh thank you, please give me more! Oh thank goodness! Finally Sailor Moon anime as it was meant to be seen. Okay, so the dub introduced me to the BSSM world, but the changes they made were just insane sometimes. I really really appreciate benig able to see the anime in its original format and I REALLY hope they do the series justice and put out the box sets for all five seasons so fans don't have to feel guilty about buying bootlegs or fansubs. Aya Yugi - Jul 23 2004 Rating: Wonderful! I am soooo happy!!! There is no complaints here, another collection added to my almost perfect collection of anime, Sailor Moon is a must have...i admit sound quality might have been poorly made, but my sound set up makes up for it a bit, so i am still extremely happy....YAY for ADV. Myke Martinez - Aug 5 2004 mukade17@yahoo.com Rating: Pretty good! Definately worth it! I think that his series was excellent! Video (10/10)- The video quality was absolutely flawless! Audio (8/10)- The first couple of episodes have a somewhat muffled sound to it, but its not not that bad. You can still hear what they are saying and you get used to it after about watching 3 episodes. Subtitles (10/10) - Perfect subs. They're not too small so that you cant read it, and they're not too that it takes up half the screen. Story (8/10) - Every episoed it just about the same. There's a monster that shows up and they kill it at the end. But if this is a series that you watched 10 years ago when you were still a little kid, it will gring back some pretty good memories. Addie Wiggins - Aug 12 2004 RavenRoseKitten@aol.com Rating: Wonderful! One minor problem, and it's not sound!! Okay, so everyone has complained about the sound, but it's really not all that bad. Have you watched fansubbed VHSs...those suck in sound and tracking so much that you cannot read the subtitles, so this is a definante buy if just for that. My only, and I mean ONLY real complaint is that there was no option to turn the subtitles off, because you know I plan on learning Japanese.....yea.....anyway, I say buy it and I would have even spend $150 on it, just after a few years because I don't have that kind of money yet. Rae L. Mogus - Aug 20 2004 sirauronunsent@aol.com Rating: Wonderful! Great! This is simply GREAT!! People were saying that the picture and sound was bad, and that the subtitles "sucked". I disagree. Sure, the sound is pretty bad, but take any other TV show from 1992 and listen to the sound of it. The picture was fine and I loved the subtitles. This is great, and for 50 bucks, makes it that much better! Michael Stenberg - Sep 7 2004 getintothegame@msn.com Rating: Pretty good! Pretty good in all, sound is only problem I purchaced this knowing that the sound wouldn't be excellent, but I didn't expect it to be so low quality. I must admit, though, that it was very good after you get used to the sound. One last thing, some subtitles are off by a little, and one or two lines in an episode are too quick to read. I rate this a 8/10. lincoln S. Spence - Sep 18 2004 android20@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! THIS SEASON WAS WICKED OMG this was the colest season 46 episodes of uncut original sailor in all its glory these episodes a very good sound quality ( to all those ppl who say """ oo we cant hear it""" i say turn it up the volume) it had nice video qaulity and i loved the original japanese soundtrack sooo cool lol. and since there are subtiltes that are optional so you can understand but anyway this is a must buy for any Moonies so .................. BUY IT! LOL Janet A. Noga - Sep 18 2004 ryogaj2000@yahoo.com Rating: Wonderful! Wonderful, but... As a fellow 'Moonie' *term 4 SM fans* I was excited to finally get my uncut Sailor Moon. Uncut-wonderful, subs-not a problem, sound quality-SUCKED!! I think most of us agree that ADV should have done something to try and fix that poor quality!! That's why I'm grateful for the subbing. I will purchase season 2, but if it doesn't have the SM arch, Doom Tree eps, I will be VERY unhappy!! Jacqueline May - Sep 23 2004 Rating: Pretty good! Not Perfect, but Good Enough for Me Okay, the sound's not perfect. I place more of the blame on Toei than ADV, mainly because the master Toei gave them wasn't exactly perfect (according to rumor). ADV did everything they could with what they had. But I imagined the sound to be worse that it actually was. I read the reviews and thought hard before I bought it. Thanks to my stereo setup on my TV, the sound isn't so bad, but could be better. Considering the price tag, this boxset is still a really good investment. I grew up on the DiC verson, and I for one really didn't think they'd pull off releasing the uncut first season. There's one episode that I really enjoyed in particular, even in dubbed form, involving the Sailor Senshi pretending to break up and an evil tabloid reporter following them. I thought it was hilarious already, but seeing it uncut, I couldn't stop laughing. This first season really brings back memories of me running late for school watching the whole thing. The box itself is gorgeous, and for the price, it's a steal. Paul L. Parkerson - Sep 23 2004 Rating: Wonderful! Well worth it!!! I would highly recommend this to any Sailor Moon fan! ^_^ The sound was a bit low , as others have said , but cranking the volume up took care of that easily. This is definetely a great buy!!! Douglas Peterson - Oct 8 2004 Rating: This sucked! Major RIPOFF! Thankfully, Rightstuf has this selling for 50 dollars...I cringe at all the wonderful ratings that people have given. Sure, the series is outstanding. And, one of the most influential shoujo series from the 1990's. However; this is one of the poorest transfers I've ever seen. ADV should know better than to try and hoodwink their customers into paying 150 dollars for such a poorly done and clumsy transfer. If they were going to make their customers pay such a steep price. They could at least take some lessons from other companies like Bandai, Geneon, CPM, MB, Animeigo, etc... Again...series is outstanding....but this ADV release is awful...sound and video quality are terrible. And, no quality extras either. It's a pure rush job for them just to make quick cash off of Sailor Moon fans. Kathleen Kilcoin - Nov 25 2004 Rating: Wonderful! Superb For all you SM fans out here this is the day we have all been waiting for. Season 1 with 46 uncut and uncensored episodes. The good thing is you get every moment of it, not just something cut lke American dub. I warn you though, if you don't like reading subtitles or listening to Japanese this is NOT for you. This is presented in Japanese 2.0 with English subtitles. I was bummed at first but now it doesn't bother me so much. You even get the episodes that didn't air in America like the one about the Chanel or the one about anime. If you want great quality at an unbelievable low price GET IT HERE. Enjoy! Michelle A-Y. - Nov 29 2004 Rating: "Okay." This is not bad... could have been better though. I know a lot of people have already complained about the sound quality, and even though I agree with most of them (the ones that aren't SO exaggerated), I still encourage you to get it! Why? Because this is the only way you can get the series! (and not for long... since it's out of print) The sound is very muffled =( The video quality on the other hand is actually not that bad. I don't think it was ADV's fault for those who are blaming ADV for the poor quality. This is because I own 2 (very old and def. OOP, released by AIKO, TOEI masters) laser discs of Sailor Moon S (so 4 episodes), and it has both cantonese and japanese dialogue. And since I only understand cantonese, I've watched it only with cantonese-- but then when I tried switching it to the japanese version.. and just like this ADV release, it was all muffled sounding (dialogue, music, sound, everything)! The cantonese version is perfect sounding but once you switch it to the japanese version, it sounds horrible! So I don't know what's going on with the master japanese copies/versions, but they really do ALL sound bad. Anyway, sort of off-topic, but last word! This uncut version of the series is definitely worth owning, and if this versions all you can get, then just get it! You'll get used to the sound after a while... good thing Right Stuf is selling it for $50 **Hopefully a remastered version will be released in the future. Mojca Zizmond - Dec 8 2004 Rating: Wonderful! First one to get you hooked I absolutely love Sailor Moon since I saw it for the first time ten loooong years ago on Italian TV. I own the dubbed version by DIC and it practically sucks (they shredded the finale). So I bought myself this uncut Box Set and fell in love all over again. Highly recomendable! Sean J. Chanderballi - Dec 28 2004 Rating: Pretty good! As Good As It Gets! In my opinion, there are some people reacting with too much complaint. It's as if you're just selfish. These DVDs are excellent. For 1992 animation, the video quality is amazing. The sound is a separte issue, but I can understand that considering it was licensed through DiC. The reason ADV could not do a Dual-Audio set is because the original dub for this season was not uncut. It was straightout edited, and the to that, six episodes were never touched. So really, if you knew that it was an original Japanese DVD boxset, then you should never have purchased it. But I think it's just great. The only faults are the cheap DVD menus, and SOME spelling errors within the subs. Only one or two though. Please, buy it! Sheila Reynolds - Jan 31 2005 Rating: Wonderful! Perfect! I've been a fan of Sailor Moon for ten years now (since the dub first aired on Toonami), and I have to say, it's absolutely wonderful being able to finally see Sailor Moon as it was intended. The subbing is done very well, and aside from a small bit of audio error it's absolutely perfect. The only problem is - and I know you've heard it before - the opening(s) and ending(s) audio. The sound is a little muffled. Personally, I wasn't bothered by it in the least. You can hear it just fine, it's just not quite what you might obtain on a CD. And, of course, it's not the subber's fault - it's Toei's, for providing faulty master tapes. All in all, the DVD is a must have if you're a fan for Sailor Moon, and at the price Rightstuf is offering it for how can you refuse? Rina Hyun - Mar 10 2005 Rating: Wonderful! I love Sailor Moon! Just not the sound quality I went to a friend's house and watched this. >____> For me.. the sound quality is horrible!! I like the 2nd season box better. It was better sound quality |
