Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Season 1 DVD Set (Hyb) Reviews of this title:
Michael E. Gmirkin - May 9 2007 Rating: Wonderful! Lovely and different... This series was a little different than the movie. But enough (lots) carried over to maintain the same world, and basic anime styling. It did include some stuff that was geared a bit towards kids (tachikomas; spider-like robots with child-like voices and kid-oriented short clips 'acted' by the tachikomas), but not so much as to truly annoy (unlike Magic Knight Rayearth, which made me wince in a few places, it was so dreadful to watch when the kid-oriented stuff was trotted out).
Long story short, it's a good story, the episodes are generally entertaining, the art is good, the sound is good. Not much not to like. Even better when RightStuf.com sells it for about 40-50% MSRP (~$50). It's definintely worth it at that price. 7 discs of fun!
Packaging, however is a bit awkward. Rather than a front-loading cardboard case, the manufacturer apparently decided to go with an actual BOX, that opens on top and houses 7 individual DVD cases, each individually shrink-wrapped. I don't know why the manufacturer decided to go that way. But I hope they release a slim-case brick set at some point... Not that this one's bulky, and it is slightly, but not TOO badly. Just I tend to think they're more attractive, easier to get at discs, and a smaller shelf foot print would make this a slightly better set. But as is, it's great! |
