Not What Fans Might Expect
This is the novel that inspired the original Vampire Hunter D animation.

Fans expecting a direct book-to-screen version may be disappointed, as it becomes obvious rather early that the film director took freedoms with the script. For example; D is more social and emotional in the novel, many of the familiar plot events occur in a much different way (ie: the death of the three-headed gorgon), and there are plenty of situations that just got cut before they were transferred to film which change the entire atmosphere.

These differences can be advantageous, though, as you'll be reading something that feels like a "new" Vampire Hunter script. As well, many things are explained which were only touched on in the film (such as the great war and the origin and downfall of vampiric aristorcrats).

Long story short: If you have a place in your heart for the original VHD animation and can accept a somewhat different version of the story that you know, then this book is for you.

Besides, at a price of only $8.95 (at time of this review), you can't really go wrong.

Not the movie but a WONDERFUL read
The book/novel was a wonderfully written, giving the feel of the old detictive novels and nararated comic books. Great use of adjectives and it painted a picture wonderfully. A great have and read for ALL Vampire Hunter D fans! Cant pass this one up!

A good look at a creator's style and imagination
As already noted throughout the reviews, this is not the exact same word-for-word plot as the film.

Now let's get to the nitty-gritty. This is a really well written novel. Kikuchi's style lends itself very well for cinema, as he takes great steps to give you a clear image of how he pictures the scenes happening.

Beyond the assessment of style, the amount of imagination in this book is astounding. While D does often come across as a Marty Stu type character, his sheer coolness makes up for this. And the mix of sci fi and horror elements, as well as western motifs, lend itself well.

Kikuchi's writing became an influence on my own. I recommend this to anyone who aspires to write great fiction.
