Cardcaptor Sakura The Movie DVD (Hyb)
Jamie Stafford - Aug 26 2002 FEATHER7@IX.NETCOM.COM Rating: Wonderful! Wonderful Story, EXCELLENT Extras - Both on the Disc and Collectible!!! CardCaptor Sakura: The Movie is the first (and best) animated feature film in the universe of Card Captor Sakura. There are two DVD versions available commercially in the States: the shortened English-only version, and the uncut dual-language version with plenty of extras. This review covers the latter (and better) version. In this first film, Sakura wins a trip to Hong Kong, and goes with her close friend Tomoyo along with Toya and Yukito, and meets with friends from school in the strange and exotic city. Hong Kong is a place Kero-chan knows well... rather, KNEW well, as the city has certainly changed since his last visit. However, this chance-of-a-lifetime vacation has a dark purpose, which is finally revealed to Sakura only when it is almost too late to save herself or others. The dual-language DVD version features both English and Japanese audio - each language has Digital and Surround options - and optional English subtitles. The final chapter of the film includes alternate angle option, which toggles between the Japanese-language and English-language film credits; also, the English-language audio uses different songs for the closing credits (which is the ONLY good thing about the English audio, as the English dub is absolutely atrocious in both translation and voice-acting). The cover is reversible; the main promotional cover shows Sakura against a backdrop of Hong Kong with an all-English front cover, while the reverse side is a much more enticing character sketch for the film with its front cover sporting Japanese text. The included insert provides both chapter titles and main and secondary characters (along with their names and voice-actors for both the Japanese and English versions). Also included inside the cover is a translucent mini-shitajiki (pencil board) of the primary promotional cover for the American market. Finally, the disc includes several Japanese theatrical and television trailers for the film, as well as an English-language promotional trailer. Unfortunately, this commercial release does not include all the Japanese commercials or trailers which were available, and each one must be selected in order to view it; in other words, there is no option to play all Japanese television commercials at once. My introduction to the Card Captor Sakura saga was a Japanese-only version of this film, and I fell in love with Sakura and especially Kero-chan almost instantly. Both children and adults should really enjoy this magical girl tale of gaining confidence in oneself and enjoy the fantasy of visiting another realm in a foreign city. Anime otaku should especially appreciate the reversible cover and the mini-shitajiki to add to their collections :-) John C. Meyer - Aug 31 2003 Rating: Wonderful! I love it! Cardcaptor Sakura is one of my all-time favorite series and I loved this movie! The feel of the movie is the same as the TV series, And if you've seen the TV series you know that is a good thing. Well-written and with some beautiful animation. Can't wait for the second movie! This one is perfect for the whole family. Children and adults can both enjoy this movie! Lindsey Switzer - Jun 4 2004 Rating: Wonderful! Watch with subs, and you will enjoy... This is a great movie. Flat-out, simple language, it is a great movie. The animation is actually a lot cleaner than in the TV series, but the charm and great Japanese seiyuu remain exactly the same. This is another case of DON'T WATCH THE DUB!!!! The dubbing on this show was terrible... Add in a slew of interesting trailers, some cool pictures and inserts in the DVD case, and an amazing closing song for the credits (Tooiko Machide, I think it's called, one of the best songs I've ever heard in any language), and you have a winner. Every CCS fan should see this, and I think most will enjoy it. |
