A flawed masterpiece
The term "flawed masterpiece" is generally found only in reviews of mediocre works whose fans have gone over the top. That's not the case here.

Masami Tsuda's 21-volume manga, "Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou" is one of the finest literary works to emerge in manga form. In depth of character, human insight, and interaction, it is second to none. There is no ecchi here, no fanservice, no self-referential humor. This is the story of two people who meet and fall in love, and of the people around them.

It is also one of the finest stories I have ever read.

As such, it is no surprise that Gainax decided to make this the first production of any sort that was not based on Gainax' own characters. It is a superb adaptation of the manga, and carries the flavor well, as well as the basics of the story. However, the story became sufficiently complex, and the visions of the director and the author diverged sharply enough to cause the anime version to lose its way toward the last third or so of the episodes. The anime concluded when the author and director could not reach agreement on the direction of the second season, without resolving the plot.

Don't let that stop you. Get this. Watch it. You will never see better characterization on the small screen. You will never see characters you care about more.

Then, go read the manga to see how it all comes out.

Kare Kano Kan Kick
Ever since I heard about "His & Her Circumstances" releasing the Thinpak set, I was excited. If you see one anime like this, you don't know what you're missing.

The animation: ***** (5 stars) Storyline: **** (4 stars) Characters: ****^ (4 1/2 stars) Extras: *** (3 stars)

I've seen all 26 episodes on Comcast's Anime Selects, and it moved me.

Too bad the anime ended after Ep. 26. I wish they make more of it. Then I'll know how it ended.(To Right Stuf International, call me, if any.)

Questions still will have to be answered like:

What will happen to Yukino & Arima? Will the relationship between Tonami & Sakura last? Will Asaba find his true love? What about Aya's play? Will it be successful or fail? What about the others? What of their roles in this?

To find out how it really ended, then read the manga. Who knows? Maybe these 2 lovebirds can...(cough)... sorry. You'll have to find out.

;) Later, fans.

One of the best from Gainax
When I first heard Gainax was working on a new series, I figured it was going to be another Evangelion / Rahxephon type of series. I couldn't believe how weird it was to watch this series and keep expecting a walking mech to try and destroy the city. Instead, I found myself liking this story about adolesence and the changes we go through as we grow up. The comedy is great. I must have watched the scene with Miyazawa chasing Tsubasa at least 20 times because it was so funny. It's great that Rightstuf took the time to create an Americanized outro with the american voice actresses. This set is really well produced and extremely fun to watch and recommend it to everyone who's a fan of Gainax productions.
