His and Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) DVD 1 (Hyb)
Heihachi Yamamura - May 21 2002 mugenhan@yahoo.ca Rating: Wonderful! GAINAX's best! KareKano has to be the best anime series I've ever seen in a long time! GAINAX did a great job with this shoujo series. Lots of visual imagery added impact to the way the story was delivered. I especially loved the way "Yukinon" eventually started to develop her character later on in the series - both humorous and enlightening. The OP and ED songs are also addictive. I recommend all three soundtracks - ACT 1.0, ACT 2.0, and ACT 3.0 - the music is light-hearted and emotional. The only one drawback to this series would be the fact that GAINAX stopped production on it after ACT 26.0. Even so, I think that this series beats the living tar out of Evangelion. It's funny, it's romantic, and it's touching. Don't even bother to "think" about buying the rest of the DVDs, just do it! I guarantee that you'll love it! Lyndsey J. Luther - Jun 15 2002 kiarren@hotmail.co Rating: Wonderful! One of the most incredible shoujo titles ever! In the realm of "realistic" anime, shining examples are few and far between. Big swords, magical schoolgirls, and huge robots are the norm (not that I have anything against them, mind,) and anime which deal with the day to day lives of normal people (and do it well) are remrkably hard to find. This title succeeds on every front. Engaging characters, interesting plotlines and unique animating styles are just a few of the highlights of Kare Kano. Being an otaku myself and having seen probably hundreds of anime episodes (if not much, much more) I can say without a doubt that Kare Kano is one series I just can't get enough of. It's definately a shoujo ("girly" anime) though, so watch out guys... Unless you're of the super-sensative persuasion, you might want to consider picking this one up for your significant other rather than yourself. Other than that, I believe this to be one of the most original and entertaining series to come out of Japan yet, so otaku, enjoy! We probably won't be seeing another anime of this caliber for a long, long time. Ja ne! Jake McCandless - Jun 28 2002 Rating: Wonderful! A drama or love comedy, who knows. Its great either way. Another classic from Gainax Karo Kano really delivers. Its hard to really label this series, "Its like Evangelion was as just another robot show." It seems to fade in an out of comedy and drama, but so subtle sometimes you won't even notice it. The main chacter Yukino, is not unlike most high school kids in the states. She puts up a mask to make herself appear more popular. But she takes the mask and almost lets it take over, until she meets Arima. I won't go father from there but in summary This is a beautifully put together animation. A must see for anyone who like to think, but laugh as well. P.S. The dubbing by RIGHT STUFF is excellent, it really captures the emotion, from each character, kudos you guys! ^_^ Sadie Goins - Jul 22 2002 Rating: Wonderful! Very sweet and entertaining I didn't know what to expect when I bought this dvd. These kinds of stories usually don't appeal to me, but I was pleasently surprised. This story is very good. It has enough craziness to suit me and some interesting turns in the story. All the characters are likable but not boring. The production is quite good and I like the voice acting. This is a charming and funny story, I recommend it to anyone who wants to laugh and feel good. maryann wilson - Aug 13 2002 animegirl@hotmail.com Rating: "Okay." Not what i bargined for When i first bought this series i thought it would be the next fushigi yuugi but boy was i wrong! The story is good and the characters you can relate to but, there is too many titles, and to much put on the exaration of the emotions, i did not find it funny, buy this sereies only if you enjoy a good story and dont mind all of the pop ups on the screen Vonnet Bree - Aug 26 2002 ginuwineluvah@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! Watch Out Anime World! When I first bought His and Her Circumstances, I didn't know what to expect. Fairly new to the anime world, I was desperately floating around searching for the best anime on the market. And to my utter surprise, I have found one of the best. His and Her Circumstances is one of the best of the genre. It has a new style to it that is different from others. While some may see it as a typical high school crush theme to it, His and Her Circumstances delves deeper into the rivalries of high school and first love. The characters are enchanting, and also hilarious! The main characters, Miyazawa and Arima, were developed well, and all in all, I give His and Her 6/5 stars. I can't wait till the next in the series comes out. Stephanie A. Gage - Aug 27 2002 Purpleplaygirl21@aol.com Rating: Wonderful! Greatest love Anime in the Universe!! His and Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) is a must see and must buy anime! This first volume will keep your head laughing away and your attention throughout the episodes. If you are a true Otaku, then this should be on your list of most favorite of anime. This anime is about two people who live to be the best at everything. The girl Yukino, lives to get praise, praise, and more praise. The guy lives to fit in and be honored. Yukino has a funny family and it makes you wish your family was more like hers. So, don't get left out of all the fun!! Get up and get this Kare Kano right away and you will surely agree with me! nathaniel c. crain - Aug 30 2002 Rating: Wonderful! Marvelous! Just a short word of advice: Watch one episode to see why everyone thinks this series is so great. I normally dislike romance, but a friend convinced me to watch the first episode. I could not buy the DVD fast enough (which happened to be frustratingly rare in my area!). Gainax have outdone themselves this time! Moses V. Ragasa - Sep 1 2002 Rating: Pretty good! Cute with lots of heart This show (or rather this first disc) makes me wish I was back is high school... At the same time, it make me glad high school's over. The story overall gives me plenty of fond memories when I was young. I like the voice acting (for BOTH original Japanese and dubbed English versions). That and the addictive music convey emotions very well. The animation takes some getting used to though. There are plenty of pop-up titles, caricature images, AND comic-book panels that just move around the screen. If you can look past that, this would be a great teenage romantic comedy. PS My disc have some problems with a couple of title text. One is during the beginning of ACT 1.0, and the other's the beginning of ACT 4.0. Does anybody else have these problem? (hence the "pretty good" review instead of "wonderful") Christopher Fowler - Sep 4 2002 Rating: Wonderful! My first shoujo I took one look at the pink box and told my self "Why the heck am I of all people buying such a cutesy little series for chicks?", but being such a huge fan of Anno-san's style, I had to at least try it. Now I can honestly say I haven't laughed, hurt, and smiled so much in a long time. Definitely leaves me longing for MY highschool romance days when *I* was in denial of the girl I was interested in. Ahhh, such sweet memories.... but I digress. Great production value, oodles of cool DVD features used, great story line, fun characters, tension that makes your heart burst... I'm hooked and I've only seen the first DVD. You find yourself rooting for the heroine to make the right choices over and over again, slapping your head screaming "doh" when she doesn't, and grinning ear to ear when she does. GIMME THE NEXT DVD, I LOVE THIS SERIES. Reinaldo CancelVega - Sep 10 2002 Aybalababa@aol.com Rating: Wonderful! GAINAX has done it again...surprised? Guess not. For an old anime fan like myself who can sit and enjoy an afternoon watching SamurayX and SIN with my sons and then turn around and spend a marathon night with my daughter watching Fushigi Yugi (I have seen 3 different spellings choose your favorite) and Sailor Moon (yes we are Moonies) it was really refreshing to see such a sweet, warm, funny and well-written series. The character developement is done so masterfully that even thou at first the main female character (YUKINO) is the despicable kind you can't help but to like her. And as the plot develops, and you get to know her better you identify with her and her very, not so unique set of "Circumstances". If you have any sensitivity at all for your fellow humans you will find yourself laughing with the characters (not just at them) sobbing with them and wanting to scream at them when they are doing something really stupid. Looks like japanese highschoolers are no diferent to ours. One thing you should do is read the translator's notes. They will help you understand a little more the cultural background. This is a series all of you guys out there should see so you can have an insight into the female teenager mind. And you girls, get your guys to sit and watch it with you, who knows, it may bring you two closer. P.S. How about that; japanese teenagers can go thru live without using magic or high-tech gizmos to solve their problems. I guess there is still hope for them. Chris Wright - Sep 14 2002 Rating: Wonderful! "You may dream" of this kind of anime to come, and it's finally here I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEE THIS ANIME IT'S SERIOUS BUT NOT ALL THE TIME AND IT'S VERY FUNNY. IT ALSO CONTAINS THE BEST CHARACTERS FROM ANY ANIME i.e. Abasa and pero^2. IF YOU WANT AN ANIME YOU CAN ENJOY BUY THIS Lisa Melegari - Nov 9 2002 TheHippie7@aol.com Rating: Wonderful! Best use of $26 I've seen in a long time! My biggest gripe about buying anime on DVD is you just don't get what you pay for. Too often I've had to lay out nearly $30 for a disc only containing 3 episodes. With all this great compression technology...why am I not getting my moneys worth? This isn't the case with the Kare Kano DVD...not only do you get 6 complete episodes, but they stuffed it full with translation notes, character profiles...the whole 9 yards. You even get two choices for the subtitles: hard (both dialogue and on-screen text translations) or soft (just translated dialogue, leaving the on-screen text untouched). Plus production notes, storyboard sketches, scene comparison...I don't think they could've stuffed another second of data on here! But it's not just the value that makes this a great buy, it's the show itself. Even if it had been another 3-episode wonder disc, I still would've bought it. This is an excellent series (as if you'd expect anything less from Gainax!). Just the right mix of romance, comedy, angst, and everyday life (well, everyday for a Japanese high school student)...this is a great psychological piece sure to spark your emotions. Not to say this is a heavy story, it's easy to follow and a great choice for a new fan of Anime as well. The translation notes included on the disc help you completely understand the story line and get REALLY involved. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the next DVD to come...and just wait until the graphic novels get here! This first disc was well worth the wait! Mojo Shojo - Jan 10 2003 Rating: Wonderful! Snuggle-rific! This ranks right up there next to Kimagure Orange Road on the "movies that put the wife in a romantic mood" list. It might seem a little wierd listening to the vocalization of thought we have all had at one time or another, but the characters and their feelings and insecurities are right on the mark. This movie is great! Great animation, and Yukino is one of anime's cutest! Jayme A. Mueller - Feb 10 2003 Rating: Wonderful! I thought it was incredibly sweet! All I can say is, I want to see more! Paul Hanley Jr. - Mar 4 2003 redxiii101@aol.com Rating: Pretty good! A great romance comedy I have to say.... just like some other anime that I have bought in the past, I had no clue what I was going to think about His and Her Circumstances. Once again, I found myself shocked. The first episode started off slow, but after that it took off and I couldn't wait to see the story unfold. Anime Gee - Apr 3 2003 animegee@yahoo.com Rating: Wonderful! This is so damn good! Kare Kano (His & Her Circumstances) is one of the most funniest, but deepest animes out there! One minute you're laughing your ass off & the next minute you're crying. I give it a 10 out of ten. Adam Colby - May 5 2003 gourry.slayers@verizon.net Rating: "Okay." Not what I had expected I bought this anime series expecting a love story just like any other. But boy was I wrong, when I watched the first few episodes I began to think that His and Her Circumstances was an incredibly stupid anime. Why do I think this? Well, they constantly use chibi drawings and make the main charactaers look really stupid. The way the main characters over acted sometimes sickened me. Just like EVANGELION sometimes they reuse scenes, have big pauses, some pictures that have no relation to the story appear, and they have alot of these big emotional/psychological gigs. The ending credits also disapointed me, because it was just like a video camera going through a building. But now you must be wondering why I rated this anime "Okay", well even though after the first few episodes, I thought it was incredibly stupid I began to get addicted to it. Suprisingly, the story was pretty well thought out and I liked the character developement with Yukino and Arima. It is also pretty funny in some parts. The story relates to how real people actualy think, from both the guys and girls perspective. I don't really like to watch anime in english all the time but, the voice actors were really good. I think Crispin Freeman (voice actor for spark, zelgadis, and that guy from chobits) was a directer for the voice cast (not sure) I also know Lisa Cortez comes in later in the series(voice actor for lina inverse and deedlit). Overall the anime was alright, not the best but maybe worth watching once. Jessica N. M - Jun 10 2003 ella822@juno.com Rating: Wonderful! EXCELLENT, This volume will have you dying with laugther You will not be disapointted. When you watch this. It has comedy, a love story, and hijinks. If you don't like it email me and i'll recommend something else. Just tell what you like in your anime and i'll recommed something you will LOVE! Cya Felicia Girdner - Jul 17 2003 pixi_jo@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! The Best Anime I have ever seen!!! I had heard so many good things about this series before I went out and picked it up, but boy I was just blown away by this show! All the characters are extremely likable and well developed. The story line will suck you in as well; high school romance that feels very real and emotional. The animation also varies in it's pace from slow dramatic moments to frenetic comedy, sometimes all in the same seen. I highly recommend this show to everyone! It's not just a girly romantic anime! Hashim O. Bannaga - Feb 7 2004 Feat747@aol.com Rating: Wonderful! Great Show! From the moment I popped in this DvD I loved every minute of it! This is a great show that just goes to further cement Gainax's status as the studio that just can't go wrong. His and Her Circumstances is for everyone who likes romance, comedy, and drama. 5 out of 5 it is a must see. Everyone buy it now. Anime Man - May 22 2004 Tokyoboy86@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful!
