Saiyuki DVD 1 (Hyb): The Journey Begins
scott s. masters - May 1 2003 Rating: This sucked! DON"T BUY! This has to be the WORST anime for such a current one. The animation was so putred that only mouths moved and even then they used camera tricks to avoid animating a mouth and getting away with only a still frame. Every character had the same personality and same designs everone else has used in a million other anime series. The designs were horrible in general, going so far as to make every woman on the show, regardless of age, to have HUGE breasts. The plots in these very short story arcs don't allow for charater development, a real plot, and by the time you finish it (asuming you didn't already jump up and down on the video) you want to hit the makers with a stick. Worth watching I mostly disagree with the above review. Granted, the animation sucks, I don't deny that. Also there is an unnecessary amount of swearing. However, this show is funny. THe fights between Gojyo & Goku are hysterical, especially when Sanzo intervenes. Speaking of Sanzo, where the hell does he get that paper fan from??? If the above review makes you wary, then rent this first, I think you will like it. The connection to the original Journey To The West legend is what really makes this interesting. A mixed bag of cool and crap I'm not even sure what to think about this anime...while the action sucks for the most part, this is definitly one of the funniest animes ever. Son Goku is absolutely hilarious, and keeps this otherwise mediocre show afloat. It might seem that I'm under or over praising this show, but hey, different strokes for different folks. And for once, I didn't give something a wonderful rating!! Hmmm...welp otakus, that wraps this one up, but before I go, I recommend RahXephon to those 3 other people who hated Neon Gensis Evagelion as much as I did. I really don't know what the hell the rest of these people in here are talking about! This is an EXCELLENT series -- for those who aren't aware of it, Saiyuki is one of the hottest anime series in Japan, and I am so happy that it finally made it here to the States~! The animation is original and great, the main characters are hot, the storyline is quirky but cool, and it's a great series overall~! Jess Stoncius - Dec 17 2003 Rating: Pretty good! I like this show enough to keep buying it, apparently. The top review up there I don't think is all that fair. Yeah, they resort to some pretty cheap animation tricks (like demons exploding into fuzz) that wear on you after a bit, but the show is rather funny. Also, there's more character development as you get deeper into the series. It's a toss of the dice as to whether this would appeal to any given male (some might like it for the humor, though the action is a little lacking), but there are probably more reasons for females to watch this show, especially if they're tired of the usual "girls' anime" with annoying female leads. |
