Any Gundam fan will love this
With Bandai focusing on newer, flashier Gundam series for America, with Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny at the forefront, the Universal Century timeline is falling away. The Universal Century is where Gundam began, beginning in 1979 with "Mobile Suit Gundam," and then continuing with "Zeta Gundam," "Gundam ZZ" (Double Zeta), "Char's Counterattack," "Gundam F91," "Victory Gundam," "Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket," "Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory," "Gundam: The 08th MS Team," and "G-Saviour," to name the major animes set in that timeline.

This "Universal Century Gundam Movie Pack" was rather unexpected. It contains five movies: the Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy ("Mobile Suit Gundam I," "Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow" and "Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space") which was released starting in 1981 and what is led Gundam to where it is today in Japan; "Miller's Report," a movie that fits between episodes 7 and 8 of "The 08th MS Team," and "Char's Counterattack," the final chapter in the Amuro and Char rivalry.

The Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy was shown in Japanese theaters beginning in 1981. Created after the failure of the TV series, it was made with clips from the show, and revised a bit. Fans of the TV series will notice that there are a few differences, some more pronounced than others. The movies are only available subtitled.

The 1996 movie "Miller's Report" doesn't quite fit in this set. This movie was made to further add on to the eighth episode of "The 08th MS Team." If you haven't seen that series, don't even bother watching this. You won't understand a thing. Fans that have seen the TV series will appreciate this movie, though.

"Char's Counterattack," released in 1988, is set after the events of "Mobile Suit Gundam," "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam" and "Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ." The "Zeta Gundam" boxset will be available on November 23, while ZZ is currently in production and will likely be released middle to late 2005. The events of "Char's Counterattack" will make the most sense if you've seen those three series beforehand, but "Mobile Suit Gundam" as well as a brief knowledge of Zeta is all that you need to get by.

All in all, this boxset will be a treasure to fans of the series, and a welcome change of pace from the deluge of Gundam SEED stuff that seems to be slowly taking over. Without the Universal Century, there wouldn't even be a Gundam SEED, so anyone who considers themselves to be a Gundam fan should take a look at where it all began. -- Colin Zeonline [http://www.zeonline.net/]
