Wolf's Rain Graphic Novel 2 (184 pgs)
Kim L. Penn - Feb 14 2006 Aawrah@gmail.com Rating: Not all that good. Poor retelling I origianally got the Wolf's Rain manga to further my understanding of the anime. Boy was I dissapointed. This is a total retelling of the story and a half-hearted one at that. I would have accepted a different version of the story if more time had been taken in doing so. The whole thing feels rushed and whole events are simply ommited. There is no Jagura, no Zari, and Hamona is given a mention I think. There is no back story given to the characters at all and Kiba's significance as the wolf who will open Paradise is non-existant. The story lacks character development and therefore lacks any kind of weight. To top it all off the ending is even more ambiguous than the anime. They all just "sing" with Cheza to blow up an airship piloted by who knows (since there's no Jagura it's hard to say it's hers. But it would have been in the anime) and that's it. Then it cuts to two characters that were invented in the manga after presumably a few years. The only reference to Kiba's pack is one of these characters says, "I can hear the song of the wolves." That's the end. What? Where did Kiba's pack, Cheza, Blue, Quent, Cher and Hubb go? Are they alive or dead? No one knows. The art is lovely however except for the wolves whose anatomy leaves something to be desired. The only real problem with the art is that Tsume looks different in almost every frame and looks just like another wolf that appears in the story which is really confusing. I would only suggest this to the die hard WR fan who just wants more and no one else. This just falls short of the majesty that was the anime. |
