Princess Mononoke DVD (Hyb)
Chris - May 15 2000 Rating: Wonderful! The finest anime ever produced Miyasaki's finest work (which is a HUGE statement...he's never created a bad one) works brilliantly because: 1) The most beautiful animation you'll EVER see...miyasaki spent light years on just about ever cell (eat that disney!) 2) One of the finest tales you'll ever hear/see...the fact that there really is no clear cut BAD guy or GOOD guy makes you enjoy it even more....the symbolism and thought put into this project is amazing and understandable (unlike Akira which was amazing too but a total mindjob). 3) The dubbing is okay (celebrity status (claire daines, billy bob thorton, etc.) doesn't equate to good voice talent, but it's still much better than most dubs). 4) It's a miyasaki film...'nuff said!! Morgan Tulang - May 15 2000 mctbajoe@san.rr.com Rating: Wonderful! OUTSTANDING A truely epic film. I first saw it in the theatre in Japan 2 years ago and was blown away. It didn't get nearly the press attention it should have in its American release. A classic Miyazaki film. This should be in any and everyone's anime collection. I already have the VHS tape in the original Japanese version. JoJo - Jun 11 2000 Rating: Wonderful! Truly one for everyone's collection! An excellent movie for anyone who loves anime. However, the DVD version should include a SUBTITLED track so everyone can truly enjoy every moment. Bunny - Jul 2 2000 bunny@magworld.com Rating: Wonderful! Awesome, but needs a DVD version in SUBTITLES! This film was one of the most amazing anime movies I have ever experienced. And I say experienced [as opposed to watched] because you don't just watch a Miyazaki film, you experience it. It is something that you don't forget. My only disappointment is that it is not available subtitled. Luckily I was able to see it subtitled [fansub] a while back and since my friend and I watch subtitled anime only it is really disappointing that it is not available to me. I did see it in the theater and admittedly it was not back, especially for a dubb, but Miyazaki's work is so wonderful I was able to watch even a dubb. I highly recommend this film but if they ever release a subtitled version I recommend you pick that one up and experience Miyazaki and his original vision!! Rubikant - Jul 20 2000 minakochan@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! Miyazaki is best heard in Japanese This is one of, if not the best anime film I've ever seen. Anything by Miyazaki is a good buy, as is this. However to truly experience Miyazaki it should be heard in the original Japanese. The English voice actors did a great job and should be commended though. This DVD should be Japanese and English so everyone is happy/, Hyden Weiner-Grossman - Aug 9 2000 D_grossman@icdc.com Rating: Wonderful! one of the most spectacular anime of all time as of this date Princess Mononoke is not out on video, but i have seen it in the theaters, and being the Huge anime fan that i am, and having seen over 100 different anime i think i have the right to tell you that it doesnt get much better then Princess Mononoke. it is a true masterpiece of the animated arts, Princess Mononoke's art is some of the best in the business, as well as the spectacular dub, and the wonderful scale and story is one of the best ive ever seen, anime or other. Princess Mononoke is a magnificent masterpiece that should deffinitlly go in your anime collection Jessica Glenn - Aug 15 2000 Rating: Wonderful! Stunningly beautful... This was the very first anime movie I had ever seen, at the prodding of a anime-obsessed friend, and even now, after seeing dozens of anime movies afterward, it is still my favorite, rising above all of the rest. The soundtrack was wonderfully orchestrated, the plot was intriguing, and the dubs were very good, in my opinion (although Billy Bob Thorton and Claire Danes performances were a bit ify). I recommend this movie to people who like good movies, not just anime fans. The only downside was the pitiful response of the American audience when this movie came to theatres last November at selected cities. It's sickening that the best animated movie in the world can be overshadowed by Pokemon. Please see this movie! Kelly - Sep 18 2000 forsteen@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! Mononoke Hime being dubbed Ok, here I go. First of all I don't mind Mononoke Hime being dubbed but I've seen it subtitled and the fact that it will not becoming out both sub and dubbed is just a mistake in marketing. Everybody knows that akira came out sub as well as dubbed and most of the people I know and they know enjoy the subtitled because the dubbed misses some of the plot lines. Please if you will tell the marketing personnel that they are doing a grave injustice to those who enjoy the all of the plot in a great movie, especially those created by Hayao Miyazaki. audra - Oct 25 2000 Rating: Wonderful! SUBTITLES PLEASE It's a wonderful film. I think it might even be better than nausicaa, but come on, fans crave subtitles!!! Give the masses what we want. The origional japanese dialogue is always wanted by any hard-core fan. The dub does have some excellent work. Billy Cruddup did a wonderful job as Ashitaka, I couldn't have asked any more out of an American actor. Also the fact that some familiar anime voice actors did background voices was a comfort. I almost can't wait for Miyazaki's "Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind" to be released comercially...... now if they'll only release a subtitled version...hn.. AniMike - Nov 28 2000 animichael@yahoo.com Rating: Wonderful! Listen to EVERYONE and buy this film!!! I first saw this film when it came to the theatre and fell in love. The DVD version coming out this December should have French, English, and (so I heard) the Japanese tracks. I read what others said of the dubbed and since I have yet to see the subtitled version I can't say which is better, though I usually prefer the dubbed, especially with the voice of Minnie Driver(I loved her voice in Tarzan too). Anywho this IS the best Anime ever. I found out you could rent it a couple weeks back and watched it 3 times in the five days I had it. I am going to tell you only one more time that you should buy this movie, in fact you should buy anything by Hayao Miyazaki because if ever there was a King among Animation; stories, character design, or otherwise he would be reigning champion. For you haven't seen anything until you've seen a guy riding on a red elk take the head off a guy riding a horse with just one shot w/ a bow and arrow. Jon Turner - Dec 26 2000 FLOYDELTA@AOL.com Rating: Wonderful! Spectacular DVD release of Miyazaki's masterpiece. I got my copy of the PRINCESS MONONOKE DVD as a Christmas gift… and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! It is the only ANIME DVD I own (the other two DVDs I have are THE GATE TO THE MIND'S EYE and A BUG'S LIFE) - and the only DVD player I have is the one on my IMAC. So, I'm not an expert on reviewing DVDs, so I'll just give my impressions. No need to mention about the film (you all know it by now), so let me get down to the technical details. The video transfer is absolutely breathtaking. Despite a few film scratches now and then, the visuals are sharp, crisp, and clear. I was told that it was enhanced for "anamorphic TVs" (I'm guessing its TVs sized like a movie screen, although not as big), but on my IMAC, I was able to view it in letterbox format. That's fine with me, because I tolerate letterbox. Anyway, I saw a lot of pictures that I didn't notice on the rental VHS (they had to pan & scan the film), and this, to me, was a real treat. The audio is ten times better than the VHS. It sounded somewhat muffled on the VHS (maybe it's the quality of my VCR, even though it plays in stereo), but on DVD! Man, it is SPECTACULAR! The sound effects, music, and dialogue are masterfully mixed, and sound really authentic - in a way that VHS cannot do. I don't own a 5.1 sound system (don't forget the only speakers I have are my computer ones), but I was extremely impressed with the sound quality. And to the delight of you otakus out there, the original Japanese dialogue is on the disk. PLUS! You've got two options of captions: the dubbed script by Neil Gaiman (which includes the sound effects descriptions; they ARE closed captions after all), and the LITERAL TRANSLATION OF THE DIALOGUE! This will certainly delight fans of the film (if it hasn't already), and make it more than worth the purchase. Not that the English dub isn't any good. I DID mention that I was really impressed with the dub (and still am). Even though the sound is somewhat softer on the dub than the original version, this is really no big deal. In addition to the dub and Japanese version, there is a French language track, which I didn't really check out… yet. One of the coolest things I discovered you could do with this DVD is select the captions to play the literal translation ALONG with the DUB! This option, in my opinion, is absolutely amazing, in that it gets me to tell the difference between the original script and the (slightly rewritten) script that Neil Gaiman penned for the spectacular dub. (Interesting note: Some of the lines in the original version don't have as much zippiness as in the dub. An obvious example is when Kohroku in the dub discovers that his arm isn't hurting [for the moment]. In the dub, he says [amusingly] "Hey, my arm! It doesn't hurt! IT'S HEALED!!!!! AGGGH! No, it's still broken." [This is arguably my favorite favorite line from Kohroku; John De Mita sounds like he was having a great time hamming it up in the dub] In the original version, his line is "Hey, my arm! I'm cured… ow! No, I'm still hurt." I am a newcomer to Anime, so I found this line in the original to be somewhat lame, so I guess by adapting that line just slightly, it would make it more appealing to audiences. It certainly made it appealing to ME!) The extras are not really anything special (and the biggest complaint some owners of the DVD have), but they are neat in their own right. There's the theatrical trailer for the film (where the announcer mispronounces Miyazaki and Mononoke, noticeable ONLY to diehard OTAKUS), and a five minute special featurette which features commentary from some members of the English dub cast, including Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Billy Bob Thornton. It also features, briefly Neil Gaiman and Jack Fletcher, the voice director for the English dub. I wish this part COULD have been a little bit longer (I would have liked a documentary on how the film was made and on Miyazaki himself), but this is my only gripe about the DVD. In conclusion, the DVD is a delight. It's got anything a fan of PRINCESS MONONOKE could ask for - and then some. I tip my hat to Miramax (and Disney) for making this wonderful treatment of Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece. Hopefully, Miyazaki's flims will get similar treatments in the future. Meanwhile, if you don't already own this DVD, here's my advice: Get it. Immediately. Shingetta - Jun 1 2001 corgreen@coqui.net Rating: "Okay." A little bad, but.. I saw Princess Mononoke and it was pretty interesting but there were things that I didn't like, here there are: 1- The storyline is very slow. 2- The character desing is very similar to Disney's animation and it was pretty ugly to be japanesse animation. 3- Sometimes the violent scenes contained a lot of blood but some scenes contained few blood. 4- It doesn't showed a great final battle. 5- I hate stories that someone got to show many attention to the movie. Now what I really liked was the animation and the most important thing in any cartoon The Voice Acting, I heard all three languages and all of the were SPECTACULAR in particular the French language track. Sayonnara, adios, goodbye. Jon Turner - Jun 28 2001 FLOYDELTA@AOL.com Rating: Wonderful! Updated (somewhat)... now that I have a REAL DVD player. Yes, I have previously typed a RAVE review on this wonderful DVD treatment of PRINCESS MONONOKE, but at the time I wrote it, I didn't have a real DVD player, only my IMAC. Now that I have one (a PHILIPS one), I can tell you how really breathtaking the experience of watching it is. The colors, transfer and movement are so gorgeous and jawdropping that I swear, you'll be glued to the screen. And the sound quality is spectacular (and even better yet, the left channel on the English dub of MONONOKE on the DVD, (from the brief spot checking I did of it anyway), isn't muffled when we're about 23 minutes into the movie [which is what happened with the VHS - I don't know why]. And the bonus video in the "extras" department has a smoother, better, and cleaner viewing experience than it does on the IMAC. It's SO smooth, it literally blows that of VHS out of the water! No wonder everybody's raving about DVDs right now. I will definitely try to pick up more DVDs in the future. But make sure that you do NOT pass up this wonderful DVD treatment of PRINCESS MONONOKE. Even if you have your doubts on this movie, at least give it a try. It is an experience you'll come away moved from. Very, very highly recommended. Josh Jones - Jul 22 2001 reelman84@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! the DVD is good, but you really must see it on 35mm film First off, I am a film collector. I happen to latch on to a theatrical print of Mononoke Hime last year. The film stock Miramax decided to use(Kodak 2382) or their "vision" stock blows the DVD right out of the water. If you insist on seing this film the way it was ment to be seen, send me an E mail when you drop though North Dakota, and I'll show you color that will make your jaw hit the floor. I also own the DVD, and the picture stability is also very good on film and Video, although the film contains 8 times the resolution( an estimated 4096 lines for a 2.35:1 frame, however, Mononoke is a 1.85:1 film) Josh Joe B. - Oct 22 2001 jokuu8485@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! In one word... Amazing! This has to be one of the best animé movies I've ever seen. The voice acting was great, the animation is spectacular, and the storyline is extremely well-done. Don't miss out on this masterpiece. Ever animé fan should love this one! ^_^ Daniel Tuckerman - Feb 2 2002 stw_mjuice@hotmail.com Rating: Wonderful! Mmmmmmmmm yes yes yes yes Yes Yes YeS YES YES! Speak of this and your mouth should water! This movie started my love of anime, and i just wanted more, If only more anime were like this one, its smooth, got cool battle scenes, and great story. Since im in Australia it was not released on DVD or VHS down here so buying from rightstuf was my only option. Thankyou Mononoke. mark d. hayes - Apr 22 2002 ultimus1234 Rating: Wonderful! Cant think of anything wrong with this one I found out about this movie while watching the Starz Action Channel last year and thought it was great so i got it on DVD. Not many anime's are over 90 minutes long and for this being long it had a great story line and ending and was rather interesting. I give this a 9 out of 10 because its just a great movie, if only there were more violence then i would give it a 10 but its well worth the money. Buy it now! Jesse Hausler - Feb 6 2006 Rating: Wonderful! Excellent movie with a message I've been meaning to watch "Princess Mononoke" for a while now, but my best friend told me, "Dude, you're watching it RIGHT NOW!" a few days ago. Afterward, I slapped myself for not watching this masterpiece sooner. The gorgeous animation and music speak for themselves, and (despite what some sub-nuts say) the dubbing was excellent. Also, it features a cool medieval atmosphere that feels more genuine than, say, InuYasha or Ninja Scroll. What really made this show shine, however, was the involving plotline, the unique characters, and the underlying message. Ashitaka, our protagonist, is told to go west by the village medicine woman. His mission: "to see with eyes unclouded by hate." It proves to be a hard task. When he gets there, he finds an impending war between two groups that hate each other to the point of obsession. What really complicates the situation is that neither side is completely innocent OR guilty. This realization that sometimes no one (or everyone?) is in the wrong, and that the only solution in such times is forgiveness, is the real underlying message of "Princess Mononoke", far more so than the environmentalist message touted on the back of the DVD. Anyway, this is something that anyone (anime fan or not) owes itself to see. It's DEFINITELY not your "business as usual" anime with giant robots and cutesy magical girls. While you probably won't remember those ten years from now, you may remember this when you retire. I give "Princess Mononoke" five stars out of five, with no reservations. Try it, then buy it. 'Nuff said. Cameron E. Bolan - Jun 23 2007 camdog300@htomail.com Rating: Wonderful! WHY ARE YOU NOT SEEING THIS. This is anime that everyone old enough should see. The voice acting is super. They bring in Billy Bob Thorton who does a great job. The animation is masterful. The story captures you from the beging and takes you through to the end. Good movie. Jamie L. Altes - Oct 27 2007 confedarate_woman22@yahoo.com Rating: Wonderful! grat It is a great movie ROY A. SANDOW - Dec 24 2008 ROYSCARTOON@YAHOO.COM Rating: Wonderful! AWESOME MOVIE Very, very, very good movie. I even got the tape of it from Japan. This movie came to me wrap in a very colorful box. I'll treasure it. But, please, put some subtitles on the disc. Thank you. Marc Gonzalez - Jan 6 2009 Rating: Wonderful! Outstanding movie When I first saw this movie I fell in love with it. To be honest this movie is actually what got me into Japanese Animation and I have never turned back. It has a great story line and its development of the story and the characters is superb. |
